John lived in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland-Virginia area for
about 10 years. Charles research: "A List of Names; of the
living in Virgiia on Feb 16, 1623" shows a Peter Hereford at
Elizabeth Cittie on page 184, "Musters of the Inhabitants in
Virginia" shows that in the Muster of Thomas Bennett, a Roger
Heford aged 22 in the Returne 1623, and a James Herfold, also in
1623. Many family genealogist have searched and find no
evidence of Peter Hereford before or after this recording.
Charles has ruled out the other James Herefords by documenting
their where abouts in England. I wish our James was the James
that m. Ann Green as some genealogist have recorded, but he is
not, the James she m. in 1695 was the son of James in England.
Our James of Virginia purchased land from Thomas Brushrod 9 Sept
1689 on the "Does Neck" of the Potomac River. There is no
evidence he was born in England.
From what we know it appears that James was raised in America
after his father returned to England by possibly the Masons or
Hudsons.
"Questions continue about John's activities in Maryland and
Virginia during the period 1660 to 1670, because we find him
back in Holme Lacy and according to Parish records of St.
Cuthbert's Church was married to Elizabeth Sampson 7 March
1670." They had 4 children, and he lived in Holme Lacy until
his death in 1698. According to the church records he was
buried in St. Cuthbert's in 1698, however, Charles was unable to
find his grave altho his wife Elizabeth Sampson is buried inside
the Church with an inscription on the floor widow of John
Hereford.
Error in LDS records, shows father: James Sr HERYFORD LDS (AFN:
9XPX-B0).
"The City of Hereford and county of Herefordshire was Royalist
(Cavalier) territory and continued to be enemy territory after
the Battle of Worcester in 1651 to the Parliamentarians
(roundhead) during their occupation until the reinstatement of
King Charles II. The Hopton Family from Cannon Frome were
neighbors to the Herefords and Sir Ralph Hereford was only a boy
of 17 when the war broke out 22 August 1642 and within six weeks
Roundhead forces under the command of the Earl of stamford were
sent to take control of the City of Hereford and its Castle.
Hereford was a walled city as shown in the model located in the
"Old House" in downtown Hereford about two blocks from our
hotel, The Green Dragon.
Another neighbor of the Herefords was Viscount John Scudamore of
Home Lacy, which is only a short distance form Sufton and Priors
Court. Viscount Scudamore had been collecting weapons for
sometime and storing them in the Home Lacy House. When the city
of Hereford was taken by the Earl of stamford they also seized
the Home Lacy House, all of the weapons, and household
furnishings. The soldiers caused major damage to the house.
Lord Scudamore was arrested and held prisoner for two years and
ten months.
Hereford Castle was in poor condition at the outbreak of the
war. It had been sold by King Charles I to raise money.
Hereford had been occupied by the Roundheads on two prior
occasions and when Lord Scudamore received word that the Erl of
Leven was approaching the city a third time to occupy the city,
he gathered the people together inside the walls and prepared
for a siege. The Earl of Leven soon arrived with an army of
Scots as he anticipated. History is not clear concerning the
actual battles, but Mr. Duncumb reports that the Scots under
Leven's command lost 1,200 men and Viscount Scudamore only lost
21. The siege began 28 July 1645 and ended 4 Sept. 1645 when
the King arrived to relieve the city. The King recognized
Scudamore's devotion and success in defending the City by
granting him knighthood on 4 Sept. 1645."
