In about 1819 Asa and Elizabeth Metcalf and most of their
children moved from Fauquier County to Hampshire County, VA.
Their oldest son, Lewis Harrison Metcalf, who was 17 at the
time, did not move with his folks. That same year, 1819, Asa and
Elizabeth had their first and only daughter, Elizabeth Ellen.
It appears that Asa was never very prosperous. According to
Metcalf family researcher, Tracy Hancock, no record of any land
transactions could be found for him in Hampshire County, VA. He
apparently lived there from 1819 until his death, except for
around the year of 1840. Neither Asa nor Elizabeth were shown in
the 1840 census in Hampshire County, so they may have moved in
with one of their children during that time.
By the time of the 1850 census, Asa had moved into the "Poor
House" a few miles south of Romney in Hampshire County. He was
age 70 at this time. It appears from the census records that
only one of Asa's children, J. Wade Hampton Metcalf, was still
living in Hampshire County at that time. (by Keith Yates)
Proof of parentage of Asa Metcalf has not been found, nor a
verified list of his children. No Bible record has been located.
However, William Metcalfe descendants (son of Capt. John
Metcalfe) say that Asa is the son of Christopher Metcalfe,
brother of Capt. John Metcalfe who died in 1777 (probably from
small pox). The only other probable father is James, another
brother of Capt. John Metcalfe, who died in 1776. Asa was bound
out in 1792 to William Davis, a farmer who had land on the
Fauquier and Loudoun Co. border. After Asa's marriage to
Elizabeth, he is found in the household of his father-in-law
James Weeks. He is later found in the tithables of Owen Sullivan
in 1809 in Fauquier Co. Asa briefly served in the Loudoun Co.
militia in 1798 and then later in Beatty's Brigade in the War of
1812. Since no record can be found for Asa after 1814 in
Fauquier County, we can assume he moved with his family to
Hampshire County about 1815.
The minister who married Asa and Elizabeth was the Rev. John
Monroe, founder of Salem (now Marshall), Virginia. He was
minister of the Difficult Run and Long Branch Baptist Churches
prior to moving to Hampshire Co., VA (as did Asa). Unfortuntely,
there are no records to survive of Long Branch Baptist. Some of
the other Metcalfs were members of the Little River Baptist
Church (even though Long Branch Baptist was closer to their
home) but I did not find Asa or Elizabeth's family belonging in
their records. I just checked the only records remaining for
Frying Pan Baptist and they are not found there, either.
One addition-- first probable son: Christopher Metcalf b. about
1800 (per 1850 Fauquier Co. Census) d. after 1860.
