General Adam Stephen never married. He recognized only one
child, Anne. It is thought that Anne's mother was Phoebe
Seammon, Adam's apparent mistress, who was remembered in his
will along with Anne and her children. Anne married Alexander
Spotswood Dandridge. George Washington's wife, Martha Washington
was of the same Dandridge family. Anne had a son named Adam
Stephen Dandridge.
"Born in Scotland in 1718, he was a graduate of both the
University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh. After
serving the Crown with distinction as a ship's surgeon in King
George's War with France, in 1746-1747, following the overthrow
of the Pretender, Dr. Stephen came to America. Here, in
Fredericksburg, VA, he successfully practiced surgery until 1754
when Col. William Fairfax "forced" Stephen to accept a first
Captaincy on the frontier. His distinguished years in the field
as as second-in-command to General Washington, had left him only
one thought in mind: To live at peace with his neighbors and to
find for them and for himself a town on the Tuscarora. Stephen
had served as the first High Sheriff of Berkeley County, as a
member of the House of Burgess at Williamsburg, and later as a
delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, at Richmond. In the
Revolutionary War he drove Dunmore out of Norfolk, VA, and
fought so well in the Battle of Trenton that he was promoted to
the rank of general. Later he engaged in the Battles of
Princeton, Chadd's Ford, Brandywine and Germantown. "
"In 1770 General Adam Stephen acquired a 255 acre tract of land
in Frederick County, VA, (now Berkeley County, WV) and he built
upon it a sturdy limestone residence. Severely rectangular and
unembellished, this home of Martinsburg's founder to this day
crowns it's rocky hill." History per the Adam Stephen House

"According to a Stephen family Bible, per James B. Stephen of
Sonora TX 1984, our Stephen family who moved to the Republic of
Texas in 1829 were descendants/relatives of Adam Stephen who
fought with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. This
is thought to be Major General Adam Stephen who was second in
command to Washington during the war. Major General Adam
Stephen's brother, Robert, had a son named Adam who may be an
ancestor to some of the Texas Stephen family. His brother John
Stephen may the ancestor to others of the Texas Stephen clan.
NOTE: I would love to see the inscription of the old Stephen
Bible if anyone knows it's whereabouts please contact me at:
[email protected] At this point it is not known how we
connect."
