The Botts Weems House in Dumfries, Virginia
The 200-year old museum is named after Mason Locke Weems and the
man to whom he sold the house in 1802, Benjamin Botts.
Parson Weems briefly lived in the now-restored building and used
it as a bookstore. Reportedly he played the devil's instrument,
the fiddle, on the porch to attract customers from the major
highway leading to the port of Dumfries. Weems popularized the
life of President Washington, crafting the curious anecdotes
about Washington as a youth chopping down the cherry tree ("I
cannot tell a lie") and throwing a rock across the Rappahannock.
The stories might reflect the parson's imagination and a keen
sense of what would sell books, rather than accurate history -
but they helped make George Washington a national hero for all
time.
It was the biggest selling book in America, along with the Holy
Bible, and was in continuous publication from 1800-1927.
Benjamin Botts was the defense attorney in 1807 for Aaron Burr.
Burr was accused of treason for conspiring with the Spanish to
split the western settlements (across the Allegheny Mountains)
from the United States. Botts was successful and Burr was not
convicted. This satisfied the trial judge, Chief Justice John
Marshall, but disappointed President Thomas Jefferson - under
whom Aaron Burr had served as Vice-President from 1801-1805.
Benjamin Botts and his wife Jane were killed along with the
Governor of Virginia and other prominant state leaders, in a
theater fire in Richmond, Virginia in 1811. (The Church built
over the fire site still stands, as does the basement crypt)
Please note that the greater family of George Washington has
some ties to Botts. Source: David Botts

One of the lawyers who defended Aaron Burr.
"1 While Benjamin Gaines Botts was living in Culpeper with his
widowed mother, the brilliant young attorney, John Minor
(1761-1821) of Fredericksburg, was practicing in the courts of
neighboring county seats. He met young Botts in Culpeper and
persuaded him to study law with him in Fredericksburg. Mrs. Sue
(Gregory) Whitmore, grand niece of Benjamin Botts, in her
manuscript history of the Gaines-Botts family, states that Capt.
James Gaines wrote her great grand mother, Frances(Gaines)
Botts, on the acquittal of Aaron Burr: "My son, Edmund Pendleton
Gaines, had Aaron Burr arrested, and your son, Benjamin Botts,
had him acquitted l."Under orders from President Jefferson, Gen.
Gaines had accomplished the arrest of Burr in 1805 (FTM CD #187,
p. 177). A distant relative Nathaniel Pendleton, a prominent
lawyer and jurist in New York, was the second of Alexander
Hamilton in his duel with Aaron Burr (M. Lee Minnis, First
Virginia, 1998, p. 331).
died December 26, 1811, in Richmond, VA; married, about 1798, in
PrinceWilliam Co, Miss Jane Tyler. Benjamin Gaines and Jane
(Tyler) Botts perished in the Richmond Theatre fire of 1811 (FTM
CD #187, p. 182)."
