Mother: Sallie |
Gatewood Family: The Gatewoods came from England in the 1600's.
Our line came from VA. John and Amy were their names. They had a
son named John then his son was James.
This was James Woodson Gatewoods father. James Woodson Gatewood
was born 1847, died April 21, 1921 (In Tenn). James Woodson
Gatewood was first married to Annie West. Two children were
born. James Melvin Gatewood and Ulysses Monroe Gatewood. They
are both dead.
James Woodson Gatewood was married again after Annie West death.
This time to Dollie Parks. They had one son, his name was Baily
Gatewood. Baily's mother died when he was a small boy, his
Grandmother Parks raised him. He left home when he was 16 (
1901) went to Texas and a few years later married and lived
there until his death at the age of 84 yrs.
James Woodson Gatewood's 3rd marriage was to Lucy Adeline
Hines. They were married in Hardeman county, TN Jan. 4, 1886.
They had 7 children.
Woodson Gatewood was a Farmer and Cattleman. He raised his
family on a farm which is now a part of Grand Valley Lake.
Woodson had three brothers. Pete, Green and John.
Pete and Green were in the Civil War. John and Woodson were too
young to go to War. Green Gatewood disappeared during the Civil
War when he went to bury a bucket of silver money and never was
seen again.(see record of Green d. 1885). Pete Gatewood was a
well digger. One day as he was digging a well the well caved in
on him and buried him alive.
Woodson Gatewood had three sisters- Jane, Dollie and Mytilidia.
Jane was married to Less West who was a preacher. Mytilida was
married to Ruben Bryant.
My comments( Bernice Baker). I don't know how much of this is
correct, hopefully all of it except the part about Mytilida(
Matilda) being Woodson's sister. She was the daughter of William
B. Burnett who was my gggrandfather. On William's application
for his pension for the Civil War he says that Peter Gatewood
took him home from the battle after he was injured. Peter was
Margaret Caroline's brother. Caroline married William Burnett.
The form that I have from my cousin Euel and Virginia Sisco is
on the Gatewoods.
