Joseph ECHOLS

ABT 1700 - AFT 1766

ID Number: I97248

  • RESIDENCE: Caroline and Amelia and Lunenburg and Halifax Cos. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1700
  • DEATH: AFT 1766
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3548]
Father: John ECHOLS
Mother: Mary CAVE

Notes

"Joseph Echols, the son of John Echols and Mary Cave, never married. "He was an afflicted man had what was Called the asphma which prevented him from lying Down, he never lay Down for 40 years — had an instrument made that fitted his forehead and sat a slept, his common vocation was hunting & trapping on the River - at which business he made Considerable property as he lived in the Frontier Country where game was plenty."

Joseph moved from Caroline County to Amelia County where he appeared as a tithable in 1736-38. On 1 August 1734, Joseph Echols “of Caroline County” secured a patent for 200 acres on the south side of the Appomattox River in Prince George (now Amelia) County. Two years later he acquired 386 acres on both sides of Great Bent Run. He eventually disposed of the land in two deeds. On 11 May 1738, "the 11th year in the reign of George II," he sold 386 acres to James Seay for £10, and moved from away from Amelia County. Eight years later, on 16 May 1746, Joseph Echols, then "of Lunenburg County," sold 200 acres on the south side of the Appomattox River to John Smith for £40.

Lunenburg County charged Joseph Echols for three tithes in 1748, himself and Abraham and Isaac, presumably his sons. The next years, just Isaac was in his household.

Echols probably continued to live in Lunenburg County in an area that later became Halifax County, although he owned land elsewhere. In March 1736/7 he acquired 394 acres in Goochland between Angolo Creek and Great Guinea Creek. Yet he allowed this land to lapse and John Wayles acquired it in 1757. From 1739 to 1741, Echols acquired 316 acres on the Staunton River in Brunswick (now Halifax) County: 154 acres in 1739 , 88 acres in 1741 , and 74 acres in 1741. Joseph had a mill referred to a patent of John Sanders in 1760. He much later conveyed all this land to his nephew and namesake Joseph Echols in 1766. He added 103 acres in Brunswick at the mouth of Falling River in January 1746/47.
Joseph died probably after 1766.

Notes

"Shortly after the Conquest, King Malcolm of Scotland created an insurrection in Yorkshire, whereupon William, The Conqueror so devastated Yorkshire that 10 years later when he held the first census, called the Domesday Book, the assets in Yorkshire were considered so worthless that Yorkshire was omitted from the census. This left a vacant spot in the population; and, while the Normans became generally the ruling class throughout the country, Yorkshire in particular was repopulated by the Norman tide, and a concentration of the "Thor 'stane" group was effected in that area. We find, therefore, that many of our Thornton immigrants to this country were from Yorkshire, or the region between Cambridge and York."
