"Abt. 1661, Thomas Barrett married Dinah Hickman, runaway wife of William Lindsey of Northumberland Co., VA (see Northumberland Record Bk. 1652-8, p. 98, and 1662-72, pp. 10, 11, 44). William Lindsey also shows up in the estate of Ralph Horsley in Northumberland Co. on 1 Sept. 1656 (Northumberland Order Bk. 1652-8, 91L). He's definitely a Wm. Lindsey who is new to me, but I couldn't find anything at all about descendants." Hope this tiny bit helps. Best, Bill

Capt. Charles RIDGELY III of Hampton

17 Sep 1733 - 28 Jun 1790

ID Number: I85617

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • RESIDENCE: Baltimore Co. MD
  • BIRTH: 17 Sep 1733
  • DEATH: 28 Jun 1790
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1616]
Father: Charles RIDGELY II
Mother: Rachel HOWARD

Notes

"4--6. Charles, Capt., of "Hampton," Baltimore Co., Md., b. Sept. 17, 1733; d. June 28, 1790; built "Hampton," of which it is said, "Is typical of Colonial architecture in Maryland when it reached its highest development." Hampton is not only distinctive among manors of the Colonial period, but it suggests the stately ancestral homes of England, and since Capt. Ridgely's mother was a Howard, it is likely he was familiar with Howard Castle, and designed his home so as to in a measure recall it. The date 1783, in leaded characters, are imbedded in the wall of the east wing, near the eaves, showing that preparations for building must have started during the Revolutionary War, and that marked progress was made before peace was declared. He was an influential citizen of affairs of the Province. He had no issue, so at his death his estate was divided among the children of his sisters.

"Hampton" and a large part of his fortune he bequeathed to his nephew and namesake, Charles Ridgely Carnan, upon the condition that henceforth he be known as Charles Carnan Ridgely. He m. Nov. 18, 1760, Rebecca Dorsey, b. June 8, 1739; d. Sept. 22, 1812; dau. of Caleb and Priscilla (Hill) Dorsey, of "Belmont.""
