Joseph HILL

1735 - 1 Feb 1807

ID Number: I100251

  • RESIDENCE: Hampshire Co. VA and Jefferson Co. TN
  • BIRTH: 1735, Hampshire Co. Virginia (1863WVA)
  • DEATH: 1 Feb 1807, Jefferson Co. Tennessee
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3631]
Father: William HILL

Family 1 :
  1.  James HILL

Notes

"Joseph Hill, Sr. came from Hampshire County, Virginia to Jefferson County, Tennessee sometime after 1783. He sold his farm on Little Cacapeon River to James Stone on 11 March 1783. When he came to what is now Tennessee, it was while the State of Franklin was in existence. John Sevier made a treaty with the Cherokee Indians for land on the south side of the French Broad River. It was called the treaty of Dumplin. The state of Franklin proceeded to issue land grants and settled people there. The State of North Carolina and the United States refused to recognize the State of Franklin. All of their records have been lost. However, John Sevier had a clause entered in the constitution of The Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio, and later in the constitution of the State of Tennessee, that when the lands south of the French Broad and Holston Rivers was opened for settlement, the people already living there would have pre-emption rights.

Joseph Hill,Sr. and Jesse Webb both had land in what is now Jefferson County on Muddy Creek. The land of both was surveyed in 1807 and the land grants issued in 1810.
[Chestnut Hill: a chronicle, 1783-1986: a history of Chestnut Hill, Jefferson County, Tennessee by Lena Maye Bush Ethier, p. 82-85]

There were several Hill families in early Jefferson County. First, the family of Rev./Dr. Thomas Hill who died in Cocke County 1 March 1845. His son, Thomas Arrunah Hill, settled in the Trion section. This T. A. Hill married Nancy Austelle and their son was A. 0. P. Hill who married Mary Carter, a daughter of George W. Carter and Nancy Coleman. (Ref: Mrs. Philip F. Shore, 301 Sunset Drive, Longview, WA 98632).

Abraham (Abram) Hill was born in New Jersey 24 July 1759 and died in Ray Co., Mo. 26 May 1843. His parents moved to Loudon Co., VA. 1761 and later to what is now Washington Co., Tennessee where Abraham entered the American Revolution at age 16. Abraham Hill was a ferry master on the Nolachuckey River at the mouth of the French Broad River, sometimes living in Cocke County, sometimes Jefferson. His children were Samuel Hill, John Hill, Jesse Hill, William Hill, James Hill, Alexander Hill, Henry Hill, and Martha Hill. (Ref:Jenna V. Ownbey, 1115 Bell, Amarillo, Texas 79106).

There was a Revolutionary soldier, Daniel Hill, who once was in Jefferson County but later moved into middle Tennessee. Also, there was a James Hill who in 1783 was one of the first settlers of Jefferson, being on the north side of the Chucky River (RAMSEY'S ANNALS, p. 277).

Then, there was the family of Joseph Hill, Sr. whom it appears migrated to this area from Hampshire Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). This Joseph Hill is the ancestor of many of the Chestnut Hill people.Facts about this early pioneer were written down by Frances Lee Hill on 18 July 1937, taken from what her father, Lon C. Hill, "wrote to Edwin c. Hill in answer to his letter pertaining to the Hills." (A copy of the above was furnished by Lillian H. Dubke).

"This record is based on what Dad has gathered from his people; there are no written records from which any of this is taken.
Four Hill brothers migrated from Virginia to East Tennessee about 1770 or 1780 up to 1785. My immediate great-great-grandfather was Joseph Hill settling on Indian land in Jefferson County, Tennessee, also, on the Cocke County line. There is an old rock tombstone said to be his grave has it cut on the rock 1732, and I suppose that this is his birth year.
Six generations of Hills have lived in southern part of Jefferson County, to wit: Joseph Hill, James Hill, son of Joseph Hill and he married a Cowan which is about 125 years ago. James Maston Hill son of James Hill.

My grandfather married a Moore; he had several brothers. Harrison Hill, a brother, moved to Kansas and his sons fought in the Union army 1861-65.
Another of his brothers migrated down Tennessee River to ........"
