Mother: Jean (Jane\Jain) MCCANTS |
Robert Martin was listed next to Lindsay (no first name) in St
James Goose Cr. Parish, Charleston Dist.., 1790. Lindsay had 2
m. over 16, no m. under, 6 females, and 14 slaves. (H. of F.
p.36.)
From the acct of James McCants settlement of 1819, LA, Jane's
daughters Agness, Elizabeth and Ann Lindsay were to receive 3/7
of Janes's share. This indicates that Jane had seven children
who were either living or had heirs at this time.
Since William d. in 1788 d.s.p. then Agnes must be the 8th
child. We know that Robert and Janet Scott Martin were Jane
McCants Lindsay's grandchildren named in her will they must be
children of a dau (poss dec) who was the wife of Robert Martin.
Robert Martin's wife is reported by descendants in DAR records
to be Nancy "Polly" Lindsay, and since "Nancy is a nickname for
Agnes, then she is probably or likely to be the Nancy that was
the wife of Robert Martin.
Elizabeth Lindsay Humphries in her will proved 1849 mentions her
Negro man Nock and her nephew Robert Martin (son of Agnes
"Nancy" Lindsay). See Elizabeth Lindsay, rec. ID 219.
Jane McCants wife of Henry McKneely in E. Feliciana Par. LA
named a dau Nancy Agnes McKneely. Jane McCants was dau of
Thomas McCants, brother to Jean McCants Lindsay. (Thomas McCants
was in Marions Brigade)
Parent Counties and Districts of Union County
Until the border between North and South Carolina was
established in 1772, there was confusion about where the area
that would eventually become Union County was located. Thus,
early Union County land grants can be found in both states.
At various times during history, Union County was considered to
be part of the following counties:
Anson County, NC (formed in 1749); Mecklenburg County, NC
(formed in 1763); Tryon County, NC (formed in 1769); Old Berkely
County, SC (formed in 1683); Old Craven County, SC (formed in
???); St. Mark's Parish, SC (formed in 1757); and Ninety-Six
(96) Judicial District, SC (formed in 1769).
Union County, South Carolina was established from the Ninety-Six
(96) District in 1785. In 1791, the Pinckney Judicial District
was established, comprising Union, Spartanburg, York, and
Chester
counties. In 1800, the judicial districts were abolished, and
Union County was known as Union District from 1800 to 1868.
In 1897, the northern portion of Union County was taken to form
part of Cherokee County, SC. This area included Draytonsville
and Goudiesville Townships.
