Cabell, supra, p.241.


Samuel Weaver and Frances, his wife, of Cumberland Co, VA, made a deed dated in Aug 1738 to Daniel Scott, of the same county, for the sum of 125 pounds, conveying land in Cumberland Co, VA [Patent 822], "on the south side of James River bounded as follows: beginning at a corner elm standing on the river parting John Parniteurs and Frances Lorange, it being part of the five thousand acres of land surveyed for the French refugees [--] 59 acres which said tract or parcel of land was heretofore granted by Letters Patent bearing date at Williamsburg the 31st day of October 1716 unto Frances Lorange, her heirs and assigns...." "Hon. James Steptoe was the eldest son of Westmoreland County planter Col. James Steptoe of "Nominy Hall" and his second wife Elizabeth Eskridge of "Sandy Point" (a daughter of Col. George Eskridge, the guardian of Mary Ball Washington). Hon. James Steptoe had two sisters, Elizabeth Steptoe who married Col. Philip Ludwell Lee of "Stratford", and Anne Steptoe who married Samuel Washington and became the mother of George Steptoe Washington who in turn married Lucy Payne, the sister of First Lady Dolly Payne Madison. Hon. James Steptoe also had two half sisters who were his mother's daughters by her first husband William Aylett. The first sister, Mary Aylett, married Thomas Ludwell Lee, and the second, Anne Aylett, became the first wife of Richard Henry Lee of "Chantilly"."

Although no vestry-book of this parish has come down to us from which we might give a connected list of the vestrymen, yet we are glad to present to our readers the result of two elections which were held in this parish,--the one in 1755, and the other in 1785. Those chosen in 1755 were John Bushrod, Daniel Tibbs, Richard Lee, Benedict Middleton, Willowby Newton, Robert Middleton, George Lee, John Newton, Samuel Oldham, Robert Carter, Fleet Cox, James Steptoe. Those chosen in 1785--thirty years after--were Vincent Marmaduke, Jeremiah G. Bailey, John A. Washington, Samuel Rust, John Crabb, Richard Lee, George Garner, George Turberville, Patrick Sanford, John Rochester, Samuel Templeman.
