In St. Mark's parish register the following entry is of
interest: July 20, 1749-George Washington, gentleman, produced a
commission from the President of William and Mary College,
appointing him Surveyor of this County, which was received; and
thereupon took the usual oaths to his Majesty's person and
government; and took and subscribed the abjuration oath and
test, and then took the oath of surveyor, according to law. Dr.
