The graves of Captain William Payne's brothers Richard in
Culpepper and John in Westmoreland are marked with inscribed
head-stones. ... Captain William Payne was an officer in the
Revolution, as you know."
A hand-written note by Elizabeth in the Alderman Library,
University of Virginia, states: "My great-grandfather was fifth
in descent from John Payne of England who emigrated to the
Colony of Virginia with his brother, William Payne & son Robert
Payne in the "Second Supply" under Governor Yeardley in 1620.
John Payne was a stockholder in the London Charter Company. My
great-grandfather William Payne commanded the Falmouth Blues at
the seige of Yorktown. He was born at Wakefield in 1753, where
Geo. Washington had also been born. His father, John Payne
having purchased Wakefield from Lawrence Washington the father
of George Washington 1st Pres. of the U.S. John Payne was an
extensive land owner. His son William Payne left Granville eight
hundred acres to his son, Daniel, my grandfather. My grandmother
Elizabeth Hoal Winter was in direct descent from three historic
homes of England, the Herberts, Townshends & Seymordes. Her
mother was Catherine Taliaferro Hoal." [Elizabeth Winter Payne
Lomax]
She wrote and published a number of short stories and political
sketches. One of the two books written by Elizabeth was "Nancy
of Greycliffe." After the General's death she was active in
humanitarian affairs and was President of the Southern Relief
Society."
