One that it was Williams; the other, Palmer. Evidence for these
names without real resolution is found in Union District Equity
Bill #148, filed October 16, 1826.
The suit is Charles Humphries & wife (Betsy) vs heirs of William
Williams. While this would lead one to believe that the maiden
name of Elizabeth was Williams, all the male heirs of William
Williams in the suit were of the surname Palmer. The will of
Charles Humphries (16) was made 24 September 1837 and recorded
24 October 1837.
The wife Elizabeth named in the will was not the mother of his
children, but a second marriage. A marriage settlement between
Charles Humphries and Elizabeth Holland (nee Martin) was made 17
February 1829.(17) In his will are named the following children:
1. Mary (Polly) born 18 March 1786, died 8 September 1870,
married 7 Jan 1806 (18), to Christopher C. Young Sr. born 14 Aug
1772 died 28 Feb 1849.(19)
Footnote Ibid., p. 219
2. William born 1788, died 6 March 1876.
Footnote Ibid., p. 219
3. Absalom Humphries
4. Lottie (Charlotte) Humphries
5. Elizabeth Humphries married Johnson
6. Patsey Humphries married Isaac Gregory
Footnote Ibid., p. 78.
7. Thomas Humphries born 11 Apr 1799, died 31 Jan 1859, married
(2) Lettie Huggins.(21)
8. Aggatha Humphries married George Young, removed to
Mississippi
9. Sarah Humphries (deceased at the time of the will) married
Jared Young [p.191]
Footnote
Sarah had died prior to 22 July 1834, at which time Jared Young
entered into a marriage agreement with Nancy Holder, Union Deed
Book W, pp. 470-471.

"For your info. Hope what follows helps explain the name of
Jeremiah Smith's mother. It was extracted from the book: A
Patriot's Legacy: The Family of Richard Dillon and Ann Lawrence
From Berti County, North Carolina To Southern Mississippi and
Louisians, Compiled By Bevin J. Creel With Mildred Penton
Richbourg, January, 2002, Franklinton, Louisiana. Bevin can be
reached at [email protected]. Another Smith researcher is Dr.
Wendell B. Holmes, [email protected].
"Joanna Dillon
Joanna Dillon, first child of Richard Dillon and Ann Lawrence,
was born on 8/22/1778 in Bertie County, North Carolina. She died
in Pike County, Mississippi. Married on 12/16/1798 to Jeremiah
G. Smith: b 12/23/1773; d 1843.
-------------------------------------------
It is often claimed that Jeremiah G. Smith was the son of
Jeremiah Smith and Jemimah Hollis. This Jeremiah Smith "Sr." was
born ca. 1755 , and died after 1827 in Fairfield Co., SC. He
rnrd. Jemimah Hollis. Jemimah was born about 1755 in South
Carolina, and was the daughter of Moses Hollis and Roseanna
Berry. Jeremiah Smith and Jemimah Hollis are said to have had at
least 4 children: Jeremiah, Jr. (rnrd. Joanna Dillon), George
Smith (this is the George Smith that was probably married to
Mary Smith, and is said to have been the father of George Smith,
who married Clarissa Dillon), Daniel Smith, and Mary Smith.
--------------------------------------------
We cannot verify for certain that Jeremiah Smith was the son of
Jeremiah Smith "Sr." & Jemimah Hollis. Whatever the case, there
certainly was a close relationship between Jeremiah Smith and
one William Smith of Marion County. What the relationship is we
cannot tell:
Marion County. MS. Court Records
--Ordered that Jaremiah Smith be granted letters of
administration on the estate of William Smith, decd., by
executing a sufficient bond. May Ct., 1815
That the Jaremiah Smith in this record is the husband of Joanna
Dillon seems clear, since Richard Dillon appears thus:
--Ordered that Richard Dilion, Amanuel King, and Obed Kirkland
be appointed to appraise the estate of William Smith, the decd.,
and return an inventory with the appraisement to the office of
this court within 3 months from the date hereof May Ct., 1815
We cannot determine who this William Smith is. It has been
assumed that Jeremiah Smith came from Fairfield Co., South
Carolina, whereas Joanna was raised in Bertie Co., NC and
Barnwell Dist., South Carolina. In light of this assumption,
some concerns have been raised over whether it was possible for
Jeremiah Smith to have met Joanna Dillon, given the distance
between Fairfield Co. and Barnwell Co. This is admittedly
difficult to resolve, however we make the assumption that
Jeremiah moved to Barnwell District before his marriage to
Joanna Dillon.
Jeremiah Smith is listed on the 1813 tax list for Lawrence
County (which appears to have included Marion County that year
as an administrative glitch) as having: 320 acres, 4th class,
2nd quality, Bogue Chitto River, I pole, 3 slaves, $2.16
Over the next 20 years, his holdings grew substantially.
Jeremiah Smith is listed on the 1835 Tax List of Pike County,
Mississippi with 880 acres on the Bogue Chitto River, valued at
$1,760. It is presumed that his home at this time was not far
from that of his brothers-in-law on Bogue Chitto River and
Magee's Creek (which runs into Bogue Chitto just south of
Lexie).
Jeremiah and Joanna Dillon Smith had 13 children: Hollander,
Martha, Eli, Jane, Edwin, Wyatt, Calvin, Eliza, Lidya, Mehala,
Malovie, Joanna, & Jeremiah Jr."
