Pioneers to be reburied today

BARBERS HILL - The remains of four members of Chambers County
pioneer families discovered during the widening of FM 1409, will
be reburied today at 2 p.m. in the old Barbers Hill Cemetery,
also known as the Williams Cemetery.
Work on the roadway by the Texas Department of Transportation in
Spring 1999 was shutdown and the agency's archeologists were
brought in to attempt to identify the remains. The archeologists
also removed the remains from the construction site.
The pioneers are believed to be part of the Wiseman, Dorsett,
Hodges and Fitzgerald families and a marker with those names
will be dedicated as part of the ceremony. The families settled
in this area of Texas in 1828 when it was still part of Mexico,
according to Harry Daves of Old River, a member of the Chambers
County Historical Commission.
Temple Dunaway of Baytown, a descendant of the Fitzgerald
family, said several other members of the pioneer families will
be present for the ceremony, some coming from as far away as
Florida. Others are expected from Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth.
The memorial will be conducted by Daves; Kevin Ladd, director of
the Wallisville Heritage Park and chairman of the Chambers
County Historical Commission; and Bob Shearer, Chambers County
District Clerk and also a member of the Commission.
The dedication ceremony is open to the public.
The cemetery is located on County Road 107 east of FM 565.
