NICHOLAS EDWARDS

Private
Application for pension made by the veteran's widow, Marcy
Edwards, on 14 Jun 1837 at which time she was a resident of East
Greenwich, Kent Co., RI . She gave her age as 88.
She declared that she was the widow of Nicholas Edwards who was
a private in the Army of the Revolution. During the time of the
revolution, said Nicholas lived in the town of Scituate, county
of Providence, state of Rhode Island. She thought that he was
first drafted in the summer of 1776 in Capt Sheldon's company.
She named various places where her husband had served and
various officers under whom he had served and that he had served
as much as two years.
She said that she married Nicholas on 5 Apr 1768 at Scituate by
Thomas Hill, A J.P. Her husband, Nicholas died on 29 Jun 1812
and she remained his widow since that time.
On 10 Jun 1837, the town clerk of Scituate made the following
certification: This is to certify that Nicholas Edwards and
Marcy Edwards, both of Scituate in the county of Providence,
were lawfully married in Scituate on 5 Apr 1767 by Thomas Hill,
J.P.
On 14 Jun 1837, Elisabeth Bailey of East Greenwich, Kent Co.,
RI, aged 55 years, declared that she was the daughter of Marcy
Edwards, that her father was Nicholas Edwards, and that her
father died on 29 Jun 1812. Said Marcy has remained a widow
since that date.
On 16 Jun 1837, Christopher Edwards of Scituate, Providence
Co.,RI, aged 80 years, stated that Nicholas Edwards, late of
Scituate, was his elder brother. Said brother Nicholas served
in the war. He said that in the month of Oct. 1777, he and
Nicholas were both members of Jonathan Knight's company, under
the command of Gen. Spencer.
On 15 Jun 1837, Thomas Parker of Scituate, Providence Co., RI,
aged 81 years, declared he was well acquainted with Nicholas
Edwards and remembers seeing him at different places while in
service. He recollects that Marcy Edwards, widow of said
Nicholas, was the daughter of William Edwards and that the name
of said Nicholas' father was also Nicholas (Nicholas Edwards,
Sr.).
On 27 Jul 1837, John Harrington of Foster, Providence Co., RE,
aged 84 years, stated he served with Nicholas Edwards in 1775
under Capt Stephen Sheldon.
On 29 Jun 1837, Stephen Young of Scituate, Providence Co., RE,
aged 78 years, stated he was acquainted with Nicholas Edwards
and served with him in 1776 at Bristol under Capt Samuel
Williams.
On 2 Aug 1837, James Howard of Foster, Providence Co., RI, aged
78 years, stated that Nicholas Edwards was a Revolutionary War
soldier.
Certificate No. 1889 was issued 26 Mar 1838 under the Act of 4
Jul 1836 at $40 per annum from 4 Mar 1831 to Marcy Edwards,
widow of Nicholas Edwards who died on 29 Jun 1812 and who was a
private in the company commanded by Capt Stephen Sheldon in
regiment commanded by Col. Wm. West in Rhode Island Line for 12
mo.
