"The Briscoe wills are on record in Charles County, Maryland,
which is across the river from Fairfax County, Virginia. WFT
gives Dr. John Briscoe's place of birth as Cumberland, England
and says that he was married to Elizabeth DuBois in England."
*The first John Briscoe above came from England in 1634 on the
Ark and the Dove with the first group of settlers to Maryland.
From the Compendium of America Genealogy.(D.O.).
* CONFLICT: Carol Mitchell wrote: "There is no proof that
Philip is the son of John Briscoe & Elizabeth Dubois or that
there was ever a Dr. John Briscoe & Elizabeth DuBois in
existance.
Unpublished Records of Harry Wright Newman, K.C.L, F.A.S.,
Claims he found no documentation that Dr. John Briscoe came to
America. See Newmans original notes at MD Room Charles County
Community College, La Plato, MD & Briscoe File SMCHS."

[I have put my comments taken from other material I have found &
read in enclosed in []. As far as one can find in the known
records in 1999 there is no Dr. John Briscoe & Elizabeth DuBois
Briscoe that can be proven] p. 90.
The Founding Fathers. Doctor John Briscoe I (b. ca 1590)
Elizabeth DuBois Briscoe p. 92.. Calvert, however, freely
invited men of all faiths to join his colony.... This is
evidenced by a letter dated Oldiham September 1, 1633, and
addressed to Dr. John Briscoe, Birksheugh, New Biggin,
Cumberland County, England, which reads as follows: Dr. John
Briscscoe, Greeting: Dear Sir... As the privy council have
decided that I shall not be disturbed or dispossessed of the
charter granted by his Majesty, The Ark and pinnace Dove will
sail from Gravesend about 1st of October, and if you are of the
same mind as when I conversed with you, I would be glad to have
you join the coloney. With high esteem, your most ob't servant,
Cecilius Baltimore. [this letter proven to be a fake & not even
a good one by the Maryland Historical Society the paper was of
later 1900's]. Dr John Briscoe was a member of the Anglican, of
"Anglo Catholic," Faith..... [the Ark & Dove will not accept
this John Briscoe as an ancestor in 1999].
p.94. Crofton Hall, the second Briscoe estate, remained in the
family until 1940, when rising taxes forced its demolition.
According to Miss Louisa Briscoe, a member of the family
residing in Texas removed the cornerstone of Crofton Hall to his
home. [there is no proof that the Maryland Briscoe were in any
way attached to Crofton Hall at this time 1999]
The surname of the Briscoe family was originally "DeBrikskeugh"
from the name of their first estate near New Biggin, Cumberland
County England. The first English Briscoe came over from
Normandy with William the Conqueror in 1055 AD, bringing with
him from Brisque in Saubia a Company of free lances to aid the
Norman cause. For his services he was granted lands in
Cumberland County. [This is true but there is no known
connection to Philip Briscoe of Maryland to these Briscoe's
1999].
Dr John Briscoe traced his lineage directly back to Lord Robert
Brisko (old form) of Brisko, a lineal descendant of the Norman
Briscoe's, from whom the line continued: [this line may be a
Briscoe line but as far as one can tell there was no Dr. John
Briscoe to trace lineage back from before early 1900's and a
contrived pedigree 1999] Lord Robert Brisko of Brisko had a son
Allen whose son Gordon had a son, Robert, Robert married
Matilda... in the time of Edward II, 1313. Their son Isold
married Margaret Crofton, daughter and heiress of Sir John
Crofton. From her the family attained the present English estate
of the Briscoes---Crofton Hall, Cumberland County, England.
Christopher of Crofton son of Isold and Margaret (Crofton)
Briscoe, was taken prisoner at the battle of Wighton. He
maintained fourteen soldiers at the Brisko-Thorn-upon Eske. His
son, Robert of Crofton, married Isabel Dikes. Their son, Robert
of Crofton, married Katharine Skelton, daughter of Clement
Skelton of Pettral Wray. Their son, John, married Tennett,
Daughter of Salzkeld of Corkly. Their son, Richard married
Elizabeth Leigh daughter of John Leigh of Erissorlington,
"YeLeigh of Ishall and Lord of ye same:; their son Leonard was
father of Dr. John Briscoe (born 1590)... (this may all be true
to the Dr. John Briscoe which the Crofton Hall Briscoe's do not
claim at this time in any way or ever did claim 1999]
Dr. John Briscoe married, in England, Elizabeth duBois, a
descendant of the Hugeunot family of Marguis duBois, Count de
Roussey (1110) whose family had fled to escape religious
persecution. [there is no proof of this marriage or of these
people at this time 1999]
p. 103...... Among the Calvert papers in possession of the
Maryland Historical Society there is a letter from the priest,
Father Andrew White, to Lord Batimore dated from Maryland,
Februrary 20, 1638, in which refrences is made to fevers among
the colonists and to the "advice of our chirurgian." [this gives
no name and could be any Dr of the day, the list which was said
to have Dr. John Briscoe's name on it for the Ark & Dove was
actually a Henry Briscoe]... In the of Captain John Briscoe (son
of Colonel Philip Briscoe and grandson of Dr John Briscoe)
dated 13 January 1733, and probated April 8 1734, he gives and
bequeaths to his son John "the tract of land where on he now
dwells called ‘Baltimore's Gift'". The very name of the
plantation, ‘Baltimore's Gift' seems to indicate that his
lordships esteem and favor followed Dr. John Briscoe to the new
world. [Would have been nice if they would have mentioned that
‘Baltimore's Gift was sold to John Briscoe by Thomas Turner in
1722].
The old trinity Episcopal Church was a simple structure erected
on Trinity Creek in 1638, ... among them is a plaque which
reads: A Symbol of Appreciation to the following Early Settlers
whose Vision and Fortitude Contributed to the Development of the
Province of Maryland. John Ashcom, Richard Bennett, George
Biscoe, Doctor John Briscoe Governor Leonard Calvert, Richard
Duke, Thomas Gerrard, William Hebb, George Platter, Nathaniel
Pope, Daniel Walstenholme. [if the families gave money the
church would put the ancestor's name on the plaque no proof
required] Society of Ark & Dove. [at one time the Society of the
Ark & Dove would accept Dr. John Briscoe & Elizabeth DuBois
Briscoe then they found to much contrived material in the family
pedigree they no longer accept them].
