  4.  George MCCUTCHEN
  5.  Wilmet MCCUTCHEN
  6.  David MCCUTCHEN

Notes

Received his early education at home and at Winnsboro, SC. He graduated from the State University. He served as a Confederate officer during the entire four years of the War Between the States. He was wounded at Fredericksburg.

After the War he served on the staff of Gov. Wade Hampton and assisted in the redemption of South Carolina. he was elected to the legislature and later to the State Senate. He was an Elder in Indiantown Presbyterian Church for forty four years and Superintendant of the Sunday School for forty years.

They had eleven children. Six sons were Presbyterian Elders. and three sons-in-law. Hugh & Thomas were Bank Presidents; James was clerk to the Board of County Comm.; George was University Professor; David and Wilmet served in the State legislature; Hugh was State Senator, died in office.

From history of Williamsburg, page 379. The first months of the year 1862 Williamsburg organized its military forces and disciplined its civilian population for the grim business of war.

Page 353, "The Williamsburg Riflemen was organized Sep 1861. In December Captain James McCutchen was promoted from First Lieutenant and commanded the company during its battle service. It became Company G, 15th Reg., Col. W. G. DeSassure."

Page 379, "Of the men from Williamsburg then under arms, the one hundred men in Captain James McCutchen's company were the only ones who had enlisted for the duration of the war."

"James McCutchen, son of Mary, 1st married Jane Fowler then to Jennie Gilland, now living on the West side of Black Mingo near McCottry's Lake, is a man in appearence and character very much like his father. He was a Confederate soldier, and from the rank of Lt., rose to be a Major. He has been a member of both houses of the S.C. Legislature. When he owned Negroes he was a very successful planter, but under the new system he has failed but not for want of energy. He is of a very hopeful disposition. This trait has led him into hazardous ventures. I made his house "headquarters" when in S.C. in 1885. I could not have been treated better, or more hospitably entertained. They have a house full of promising children, a son and a daughter have been married since I saw them. I can not state the names, nor the numbers of his children. [S541] [S1246]
