7--5. William Leroy, M. A., L. L. D., Col., C. S. A., of Auburn, Ala., b. Oct. 1, 1827; d. Jan. 23, 1902; graduated at the University of Virginia, M. A., 1850; held a professorship in Oakland College, Port Gibson, Miss., 1852-53; University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., 1854-56; Bloomfield Academy, Albemarle Co., Va., (which he organized). 1856-61;


when he entered the C. S. A., serving as Lieut. of a Co. of Artillery; was subsequently made commandant of the Richmond Arsenal, with the rank of Lieut. Col. in the Ordinance Department.


At the close of the war he accepted a chair in the University of Georgia, and in 1872 was elected President of the Georgia Agriculturial and Mechanical College, a department of the University; in 1874, St. John's College, Maryland, conferred upon him the degree of LL.D.; occupied a chair in Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., 1875-82; President of Agricultural and Mechanical College, Auburn, Ala., 1882-83; University of Texas, Austin, 1883-84; Agricultural and Mechanical College, subsequently the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Ala., 1884-1902; the degree of LL. D., was conferred upon him in 1892 by the University of Georgia. He m. Sarah Jane Fleming, dau. of Dr. George Fleming, :of Hanover Co., Va.
