From: "Deborah Byrd" [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Dunnam-McCants-Commander Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999;

"Hello, I'll jump into the fray on the Commanders and Dunnams. The Commanders both in Darlington and Sumter county appear to descend for Samuel Commander who migrated from Perquimans/Pasquotank county NC about 1690. He and his brother Jospeh Matthew were the heirs of John Harvey colonial govenor of NC. Harvey married Dorothy Took. Joseph Matthew Commander married Dorothy Took niece of Dorothy Took Commander.

The Dunnam's are connected to the Singletary and Russ families which migrated to SC as part of the 1696 puritan migrations from Mass. Dunnams are really Singletarys. They had to change their name because of an elopement between a married Singletary and a Russ daughter. They didn't last long and each went back to their homes, but the Singletary's moved out of town for awhile. The Singletary's were taken in by a Dunham family. Children of the Singletary family changed their names to Dunham/Dunnam. I descend from Russ, Singletary, and Dunhams that took in the Singletary family. Dunhams on my father's side and Singletary and Russ on Mother's." Deborah Byrd

Children:
John DUNNAM
Hannah DUNNAM b. 17 Jun 1717, SC m. Joseph SINGLETARY
Sarah DUNNAM b. 29 Jan 1720, SC
Ebenezer DUNNAM
Robert DUNNAM Nov 1726 Susan BURNE, son Robert Commander DUNNAM Sr. who m. Mary Ann DAVIS. Robert Commander Dunnam, Jr., along with his brothers-in-law, James and John Jenkins, became a part of the Methodist Protestant movement, which separated from the Methodist Episcopal Church in that area about that time. Rev. James Jenkins, married Margaret Ann Dunnam, and Rev. John Jenkins married Frances P. Dunnam. They were sisters of Robert Commander Dunnam, Jr.

"There is also a William Denham (Dunham) who received a Warrant for 50 acres land June 19, 1695. He had another for 260 acres September 8, 1697, and another for 66 acres in Colleton County August 9, 1711. There may or may not be a connection with these two. From this line descend the Dunhams of Midway, Georgia, through William and Daniel.

John and Hannah lived in St Thomas St Denis Parish and their family is listed in the Parish Record. Three children are listed: John, born May 26, 1714, Hannah, born June 17, 1717, Sarah born January 1720/21, a fourth Ebenezer is not listed in the Parish Record but in John's Will. I believe a fifth is Robert Dunham born 1726."

"JOHN DUNNAM had a grant for five hundred acres of land in Berkley County butting and bounding to the North West on Jonathan Russ land, to the Southeast on Mr Singletary land at 120 p hundred acres yearly - grant dated 20th March 1715. Signed by Charles Craven, Robt Daniell, Geo Logan, Chs Hart.
