Notes

2 James Keith MARSHALL b: 13 Feb 1800 d: 2 Dec 1862 + Claudia Hamilton BURWELL

James Keith Marshall((5)) (John Marshall((4)), Jaquelin Ambler((3)), Richard Ambler((2)), Edward Jaquelin((1))), b. in Richmond, Virginia, February 13, 1800; d. at his residence, "Leeds," in Fauquier Co., Va., December 2, 1862. Married (December 22, 1821) Claudia Hamilton Burwell, b. January 9, 1804; d. March 4, 1884, at "Leeds."

Mr. Marshall was a graduate of Harvard College, but led the life of a farmer and country gentleman, at "Leeds," situated six miles south of Markham. He was several times elected to the State Senate, and the civil war found him in office. He was one of these Senators who ineffectually opposed the ordinance of secession, but who, when the deed was accomplished, gave their cordial adhesion to the Confederacy. He was charitable to the poor, social, hospitable and generous, both in sentiment and action. After going to Richmond to aid in the organization of the new government, he returned and died early in the war. His wife survived him twenty-one years, and lies beside her husband, in "Leeds" churchyard. No stone has been erected to her memory, but the epitaphs of her husband and aunt are as follows:

"Sacred to the memory of James Keith Marshall, son of John Marshall and Mary Willis Marshall, b. Feb. 13, 1800; d. December 2, 1862. "I know in whom I have believed."

Sacred to the memory of Maria Willis, b. September 23, 1784, Gloucester Co., Va.; d. October 5, 1835. "I know my Redeemer liveth."

James MCCANTS

ABT 1796 - ABT 7 Jun 1869

ID Number: I15698

  • RESIDENCE: Georgetown & Williamsburg Cos. SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1796
  • DEATH: ABT 7 Jun 1869
  • RESOURCES: See: [S446] [S1144] [S2333]
Father: Alexander MCCANTS Sr.
Mother: Margery GOTEA

Family 1 : Elizabeth DANIEL
  1.  James Alexander MCCANTS
  2. +Martha Margery MCCANTS

Notes

1820 Census: one male head of household, between sixteen and twenty-six; one male under ten; one female between sixteen and twenty-six; The children of James McCants are mentioned in the Will of James Daniel, dated 1826, proved 1833.

The Children of James are mentioned in the will of James Daniel, indicates he was prob. married to a dau of James Daniel and Martha Jones, although there is some confusing as to which one, Elizabeth or Martha. The will of Jannet Daniel Barr, another daughter of James Daniel and Martha Jones mentions her nephew James A. McCants. A Martha McCants, likely dau of James, m. James D. Singletary.

The membership records of Indiantown Presbyterian Church groups its members by family and in 1821 indicates James McCants as a member in full communion and below his name is Elizabeth McCants, deceased, and below their names are Alexander McCants and Martha McCants. (possible that the Church record was written incorrectly; I perfer to go by the Daniel Bible Record, which shows that Alexander m. Elizabeth Daniel.)

The Federal census of 1830 which records James McCants, being between thirty and forty years of age and having two females between five and ten years of age and three between ten and fifteen years of age and apparently no wife.
No James McCants is recorded in the Census of 1840.
The Census of 1850 records James McCants, living alone and being fifty-four years of age.

The will of James McCants, dated, 2 Mar 1869 and recorded June 7, 1869, left "to Joseph Levern for his attention to me 100 acres of land, my plough ox and cart. To Sarah A. Thompson's children $400 and to my daughter Martha Singletary, the balance of my estate." [S446]
