William's occupation: Cabinet maker. Below is from a newspaper
article about William Hickman and his business:
"In the year 1814, John Couchman began construction of a tavern
on a plot of ground adjacent to the town of Winchester
(Kentucky). This ground was purchased by Couchman from Thruston
M. Taylor. On November 22, 1815, John Couchman sold the
property to William Hickman for the sum of $2,800. Hickman
completed the residence and it was his home until his death in
1864.
The walls of the house, both outside and interior are solid
brick, 18 inches thick. The joists under the first floor of the
original building are composed of logs, just as the trees were
felled with only the bark removed.
William Hickman was a son of Rev. Henry Hickman and a nephew of
Governor Richard Hickman. He owned and operated a furniture
factory on Hickman Street across the alley from the former
Episcopal Church.
On August 31, 1816, The Advertiser, the first newspaper
published in Clark County, ran the following notice: 'William
Hickman, cabinet maker, announces that he has moved to his new
building, a brick shop near the livery stable, lately owned by
H. C. Clay and wishes to rent the house he recently occupied as
a shop.'
In 1815, William Hickman married Sarah Pearson and they were the
parents of five children: Lucy, Fannie, Susan M., Nannie H.,
and William L. Hickman. Lucy Hickman married Major John
Taliaferro, who was once the circuit clerk of Clark County and
postmaster of Winchester. The Taliaferros occupied the home
until their deaths. The title to the property remained in the
name of William Hickman heirs for nearly one hundred years. In
1908 the place was sold to settle the estate and Mr. S. T. Davis
became the owner. Mr. Davis' first wife was Susan Hickman
McKinley, daughter of Dr. I. H. McKinley and his wife, Lucy
Taliaferro, and great-granddaughter of William Hickman."
William Hickman and Sarah Pearson had the following children:
Lucy Hickman. She married Maj. John Taliaferro.
