Deed Book 2, page 34, Madison Co., VA (not dated) - Order of the Commonwealth of Virginia to the Justices of the County of Scott, State of Kentucky, to obtain a relinguishment of dower rights from Frances Vernon, wife of Anthony Vernon, of their county and state, to property sold by the said Anthony Vernon to Samuel Smith, in the County of Madison, Virginia, being one third part of a tract of land which Thomas Quinn devised to his three children in the County of Culpeper, now Madison Virginia (note: This order was complied with and returned by the justices of Scott County, KY., dated August 22, 1796, with the indenture of sale annexed: "Indenture in which Anthony Vernon and Frances, his wife, of the State of Kentucky, sell to Samuel Smith of the County of Madison, VA,....and whereas Thomas Quinn in his lifetime was possessed of a tract of land in the County of Culpeper, now Madison, being given by his father, and bounded by the Rapidan River on one side and by his brother, John Quinn, on the upper side, and by Captain Benjamin Cave on the lower side, and which land the said Thomas Quinn devised to his three children and the land never having been divided and the said Anthony Vernon having intermarried with Frances, one of the children of Thomas Quinn,...for 185 pds. yeild their one-third part of the above mentioned land, etc. Certified before the Justices of Scott Co., KY, August 23, 1796. Comment: This record is proof that Anthony and Frances Vernon had moved to Kentucky prior to August, 1796, and that Frances was the daughter of Thomas Quinn of Culpeper and Madison Counties, VA. It is also proof that John Quinn was his brother, and that this Thomas was the Thomas Quinn to whom his father, Richard Quinn, had deeded 160 acres in 1768."
