Notes

Will: 18 jun 1670 probated 13 mar 1671 Bedlam's Rest, Avenue, St . Mary's Co. MD. Robert Slye married Susannah Gerard who was the eldest of the Gerard girls. She was given Bushwood Manor in her dowery at the time of her marriage. Robert Slye, although a son-in-law of Thomas Gerard, accepted a position on the Puritan Council as a Commissioner of theProvince in 1654-55. This action within the family gives an idea of the turmoil in the Province during this period. The Assembly met at the Slye home preceeding Fendall's Rebellion. There is no doubt that Slye played an important part in this rebellion. One would have to assume that he was Protestant. Slye died before the actual rebellion. Slye served many terms in the MD Assembly from 1667- 1675.

Robert Slye's public career was extensive:
Parliamentary Commission 1655-1657/58
Assembly, Potomac (St Mary's Co) 1657
Lower House, St Mary's Co, 1659

Provential Council 1660
Provincial Commission 1654/1655
Lower House 1657, 1660, 1663-64, 1666, 1669

He held the rank of Captain in the Militia and he supported Fendall's Rebellion in 1659 and after the collapse of the rebellion in 1660 temporarily lost his offices.

Robert Slye was one of the wealthiest men in Maryland. He made his living as a merchant and as a planter. At the time of his death he owned 2,500 acres of land, had at least 11 servants and fourteen slaves.
