ANNE de DREUX Duchess of Brittany

1476 - 9 Jan 1514

ID Number: I58396

Family 1 : MAXIMILIAN I HABSBURG of the Holy Roman Empire
Family 2 : CHARLES VIII de FRANCE of France
Family 3 : LOUIS XII de VALOIS of France
  1. +CLAUDE de VALOIS of France

Notes

"the daughter of Francis II de Dreux, Duke of Brittany by his wife Margaret de Dreux, the daughter of Francis I de Dreux, Duke of Brittany and Isabel Stuart., and had issue by her."

1488-1514 Sovereign Duchess Anne of Bretagne (France)
Anne de Dreux Montfort became Duchess at the age of 11, just after her land had been invaded by French troops who demanded that she should not marry without the consent of the crown. Afraid that Bretange would be absorbed into France, she made an alliance with Maximilian of Austria (whom she married by proxy in 1490), Henry VII of England and Ferdinand II of Aragon, but eventually, after a long siege, she was forced to marry the French king Charles VIII in 1491. After he died without an heir in 1498, Anne had to marry his successor Louis XII. But she insisted that Bretagne should form a separate part of the inheritance, going to a second son or daughter, or to her own heirs. Anne was a great patron of scholars, poets and artists, and lived (1476-1514)

Notes

"He m. Elizabeth Aglae DU BOURG. His marriage was also one “de convenance,” and was brought about in this way, l'Abbe William DU BOURG, who had fled from Paris during the Reign of Terror, came on a visit to Louisiana, and forming a warm friendship for Mr. Marius BRINGIER, of “White Hall,” proposed an alliance between their respective families. A niece of the Abbe then in a convent in Baltimore, became as a consequence contracted to Michel Douradou BRINGIER, younger son of Mr. Marius BRINGIER. She was a dau. of Pierre Francois DU BOURG, Sieur de Ste. Colombe, Chevalier de St. Louis, a brother of the Abbe. Her family were emigrés from France and San Domingo; having lost estates in both places by republican confiscation in the former country, and by negro devastation in the [p.116] latter. Young Douradou BRINGIER proceeded to Baltimore. His fiancée (whom he had never seen except when, as a child, she had temporarily sojourned in New Orleans on her way from the West Indies to Baltimore) was brought out of the convent. She had reached the mature age of fourteen years. They were forthwith married by the abbé, the bride's uncle and god-father, Louis, surnamed “Le Beau DU BOURG” giving her away. Her miniature painted at the time shows a young maid of gentle face and great loveliness. As a marriage present, the “Hermitage” plantation, in Ascension Parish, was bestowed upon the young couple. The marriage in Baltimore took place on the 17th June, 1812. This was the year that war broke out between England and America, and we find a few years later, the young husband acting as a volunteer aid to General JACKSON on the field at Chalmette.

The Abbé DU BOURG, who had married them, had meantime become Administrator Apostolic of the Diocese of New Orleans, and, as students of Louisiana history know, it was he who welcomed JACKSON in the Place d'Armes (now Jackson Square) after the fight, and called on the General to ascribe the victory to divine providence, which the General, in a gracious reply, hastened to do. Just before the battle Mons. DU BOURG, in the chapel of Ursuline Convent (then situated on Ursuline and Chartres Streets), before a congregation of nuns and civilians, prepared to offer up a petition for divine aid to the American arms. The statue of “Our Lady of Prompt Succor” was placed upon the altar. As the cannon at Chalmette began to boom he entered upon the performance of his holy exercises. They were not yet concluded when a courier hastily entering the chapel announced the victory of the gallant defenders of the city. In commemoration of this event a “mass of thanksgiving,” by permission granted by Pope Pius IX, is celebrated on the 8th of every January, in the Ursuline Convent. Mons. DU BOURG, a few months after the battle was consecrated first American Bishop of New Orleans. He d. in 1833, Archbishop of Besancon, France."
