Notes

Joel went with his parents and brothers to Pike Co. when very young. From "Source Material for MS History" "Jackson Coney Homestead at Magnolia was one of the most beautiful homes of ante-bellum days. It was built in 1845 in a beautiful grove of oaks with roads winding around it. A well kept lawn, flowers and a trellis with clinging vines make it quite picturesque. After the War Between the States it was remodeled into apartments. In 1900 Dudley Simmons bought it. The home contains eleven rooms, one hall and 3 large porches. The rooms are large measuring 24x24' with windows 4x7'. All the ceilings are hand-hewn. This old home was given the name "Tanglewood".

"Joel Jackson underwent a spinal operation in 1859 and died six months later on Oct 27, 1859. Emeline Coney, 49 is listed on the 1870 census with son Charles, 11, in household #35, of George Washing, Jr., a teacher, age 29, born AL and wife Mary. Emeline is listed with real estate valued at $8000 and personal property at $50."

Mississippi Cemetery and Bible Records, published by MS Gen Soc has recorded Bible Records of Various Coney and Related families.

Pioneer Families and Confederate Soldiers Reconstruction and Redemption by Luke Ward Conerly and Miscellaneous Legal and Family Records Pertaining to the Areas of Pike and Walthall Counties, Mississippi by E. Russ Williams, Jr.

The book has Family Sketches, Militia lists, Pension records for Vets. of the war of 1812, Census for Pike Co., for 1816, 1820. Members of some of the early churchs, Tax lists for about three or four years, and marriage notices and obituaries from early papers.

5 May 2002: I just got home from visiting and searching the Purls & Coneys in Magnolia, MS. I met with Oscar E. Coney in Magnolia, age 88, I have his daughters number in Memphis and will call her next week for family info. He was a wholesale grocer there for many years, a fine Southern gent.

I also met Rev. Millard Purl, a baptist minister for 53 years and WWII Bronze Star. His son is a Baptist missionary to Africa. He shared a few stories with me, gave me some names of some cousins to email for more info. he descends from Joseph Cunningham Purl, who was blind and ran a store in Magnolia. Then I went over to Hattiesburg and met Curtis Holliday also from Joseph's line.

I visited the cemetery and checked out all the Purls buried at Magnolia, there was also a list at the library.

I visited the Coney B&B now owned by James & Sharon Lawrence. They have completely restored the old Coney House built in 1886 by which Coney I don't know, but possibly William Drew Coney.

There is another old Coney cemetery near or at the site of Joel Jackson Coney's home site, but i didn't find it, also didn't have time to do the court house deeds, wills, etc.

I spent 2 days in St. Francisville, LA on the Purls and also in Natchez so ran out of time.
had the time of my life. josie
