John Rust served in the war of 1812 as a member of Captain
Daniel Matthew's** Company of Riflemen, McDowell's Flying Camp,
4th Regiment, Virginia militia, to September 28, 1813, and as a
private in company of infantry, same regiment, from Sep 29,
1813, to Jan 10, 1814.
He owned a beautiful brick manor house on the Shenandoah River
in Warren County, Virginia, and for many years was judge of the
county court of that county, and was senior Justice of the
Peace.
When his father, Benedict, died in 1829, John purchased the
inherited land
of 3 of his siblings. (Benedict was senile for the last few
years of his
life; so there was not a will.) John was the adm. of the estate.
I'm unsure of the date he purchased the house & some of the land
at Rock
Hill, which had been built by Robert Berkely, whose wife had
been given the
land by her father, Robert Carter. This house and land was
purchased by
John Rust after his marriage to Elizabeth. At that time, he
lived near
Berkely, who in 1818 had built a 12 room stone house on the
banks of the
Shenandoah River..across the river from current Shenandoah
Farms. Berkely
was murdered by a slave and was aided by two other slaves after
the murder.
Surely John Rust lived nearby, for he was called to help with
the search for
Mr. Berkely & he testified in the murder trial of the slaves.
Berkely's
family moved from the house and lands...and in 1837 (the year
the will was
settled), John Rust, took title to the land. (Before this time,
I don't
know exactly where they lived. John & Elizabeth Rust may have
already moved
into the Berkely house, for it is said the Berkely family moved
immediately.)
'Tis said the property was one mile east of the submerged bridge
at Morgan's
Ford.
In 1909, when the Rust family sold Rock Hill, here is an
advertisement which
ran in the Warren Sentennel:
"Fine farm on Shenandoah River, 430 acres in timber. A 12 room
tin roof
house beautifully situated on the bluff overlooking the bottom
and river.
Tenant house and stables for 20 horses, water in every field,
200 now in
grass. This is one of the best and most productive farms in the
county.
Situated 8 miles N.E. of Front Royal, 4 miles from Happy Creek
on Southern
Railway and 2 1/2 miles from Ashby and Success on the N. W.
House cost
originally about $ 10,000.00. Price $ 17,000.00"
This house has burned since and I am told its no longer there.
And, now
there are several places called Rock Hill.
In 1841, John & Elizabeth Rust purchased a place called River
View which is on the Shen. River, closer to the Clarke Co.
border in Warren Co. This farm he placed in trust for his
grandchildren, sons of John Bushrod Rust. My G'grandfather,
Scott Rust lived here until @ 1878, when they went to Texas.
I'm sure at that time, the place was sold and the money
distributed among the many siblings of Scott Rust.
I believe that Rock Hill was willed to Charles & his
children...since River View was given to John Bushrod's
children. In the will, John Sr. mentioned he was doing this to
safeguard the grandchildren's inheritance because John B. had
debts...so he placed it in trust for them. My guess is, John
Bushrod Rust may have augmented the farm..but I don't know. And,
I don't know if John B. later was able to settle his debts.
The history of River View is interesting:
I have a copy of a hand written note of Laura V Hale (local
Front Royal historian)
River View Owners:
1837- Division of Estate of John Ambler, 1500 acres to Thomas M
Ambler.
1841-Thomas M Ambler to John Rust, 250 acres. Don't know which
John Rust., father or son, John Bushrod Rust. He may have
augmented the property his father had purchased. Some of this is
a mystery to me.
What is interesting about the Amblers is that they are connected
to the Marshall family who are part of the line including the
Chief Justice, who are not ours.
1883-Giles Cook to Spec. Com. John Rust's estate to Charles B
Board. This may or may not have been all the estate, for John
Sr.'s will suggested the house and part of the acreage was 'in
trust' for the grandchildren. I haven't investigated enough.
1893- Charles B Board to Mollie E Stephenson.
The log part of this structure was built while this land was
leased. The frame part was built by John Rust since 1841. (Don't
know which John Rust. Jr. or Sr.)
RiverView was 200 yards north of the Howelsville Post Office. It
too, was on the banks of the Shenandoah River.
John Sr. did not live at River View. He lived at Rock Hill, for
most of his adult life.
John Rust, b.1769 was a farmer, Chief Justice of the Peace, and
when Warren Co. was formed in 1836, he was one of the first
county Judges for Warren Co. (There is a plaque so stating in
Front Royal.)"
