Mother: Elizabeth HASTINGS |
"Hastings Marks, a citizen of Hanover County, Virginia, is
proven by his will dated before 5 Nov 1761, to have been the
father of the children listed in Wood's History, instead of
John.
He was probably the son, or grandson,of John Marks and Elizabeth
Hastings.
The compiler has made this deduction after much study, thought
and research. Coinciding names and dates have been a
contributing factor in her conclusions, and have made her
willing to accept the fact that Hastings Marks headed the second
generation of Marks in this country.
All of the children of Hastings Marks were living prior to the
Revolution, several of them serving in the American Army, that
fact alone would prove that they were not the children of a
couple married about 1680.
"Hastings Marks, m. Mary ____. By his will dated bef 5 Nov 1761;
left her a life interest, she was alive at that date, and was
designated as relic of Hastings Marks, of Louisa County, VA. The
will was drawn in Hanover County,VA..."
p. 5; footnote; "4 Nov 1788 - Hastings Marks, by Wm. Craghead,of
Lunenburg, his surviving executor, by his will, left his wife
Mary, the homestead,170 a.,during her life, which right, said
Mary sold to William Pollard, and all the children, except
James, (in Georgia) and his brother Hastings Marks, who from
remoteness of situation could not come to Hanover Court House.
(Wm. and Mary,1912)"
"4 Mar 1789 - William Craghead, of Lunenburg Co., surviving
executor of the will of Hastin Marks, dec'd, to Wm. Pollard, Jr.
(Peter Marks, his son also executor). His will directed property
to go to his wife, Mary, and after her death, to all his
children, excepting James Marks, and Hastings Marks."
"4 Apr 1787 - Thomas Marks, Mary Marks, widow of Hastings Marks,
dec'd of Louisa County, VA, Peter Marks, of Albemarle, John
Marks, of Louisa, James Marks, of the state of Georgia, and
Elizabeth his wife, Hastings Marks, of Albemarle, Samuel Marks,
of Albemarle, and James Winston, of Louisa and Sarah, his wife,
of Hanover, dec;d,; whereas Hastings Marks dec'd, by his will 5
Nov 1761, left 144 a. (adj. Thilman, James Wingfield) to his
wife for life, and after to his children, and whereas Thomas
Marks has bought out his brothers, and sisters, and the said Mary
Marks is willing to give her interest to her son.' (Wm. and Mary
Quart. V. 22, p.125.)""
