Jean Velas was listed as a tithable o the first tithable list
for King William Parish, 1710. Vestry Book of King william
Parish, pp. 302, 421. Noted again in 1711 coupled with Daniel
Maubain (Mebane) appeared on the general list of French
immigrants with his wife and child.
He received a land grant, #822, dated 31 Oct 1716, from
Alexander Spotswood, Lt. Gov. Williamsburg, VA for 59 acres on
the S. side of the James River, Henrico Co. (now Powhatan Co.)
VA, it being part of the 5,000 acres surveyed for the French
Refugees. Land Office, State Capitol, Richmond, VA, Land Grant
Book, Vol. 10, p. 292, Henrico Co. VA (Map Location D-13).
On 5 Sep 1720, Francis L'Orange of Henrico Co. VA, conveyed this
land to Daniel Garon (Geurin, Guerrant) and Frances, his wife,
for 5 shillings and love & affection. Miscellaneous Henrico
Records, Vol. II, p. 475. Loose papers, 1718-1725. On 20 Feb
1750, Samuel Weaver and his wife Francoise L'Orange (Guerrant)
(Souillie) (Weaver) sold this land to Daniel Scott, of
Cumberland co. VA, for 125 pounds. Deed Book 1, p. 280.
"Fled La Rochelle France to ENG 1682, to Manakintown, VA, 1700.
His widow received a Patant for Franch Lands in Henrico Co. VA
1716 in his right. Ref: Allen, Cameron; "Francis (Francois)
Chaudoin (c1717/18-1799/1800) of Manakin town and Buckingham Co.
VA"; The VA Gen Vol 40; Nos 2 & 3, 1996."
From http://home.earthlink.net/~jorange/Gen_1.htm
"There was 10,000 acres of land that was divided among the
French refugees. Louiss Orange was listed as a French refugee
that did not receive land. The land owners were called
Patentees. There was a Jean L' Orange who died shortly after
arriving and his wife Frances received two segments of land.
They had one daughter also named Frances. She married numerous
times and gave her land away to her children by other marriages
and therefore is probably not related to Louiss Orange who died
in 1734.
The L' Orange name stopped since she had no males named Orange.
The French Lands were south of the James River in Henrico
County."
