County of Amelia in the Colony of Virginia, for and in
consideration of 32 lbs and 11 shillings current money---conveys
to Adam Jones of said county a Tract of Land containing 42 acres
in the Co. of Amelia and in the fork of Nottoway and Bounded as
follows: Beginning Turkey Oak on the Ridge Path---to Zachariah
Hooper's Corner---at head of Joseph Spring branch--- to
Chappell's corner--- at edge of Benjamin Jones' old field--- to
the Ridge Path---to the Beginning.
Signed Sealed and Delivered
in Presence of us-
Joseph White (Seal)
Moses Hurt, Jr.
Absalom Hurt
Zacheus Hurt
At a Court Amelia Co. 25th April 1771. This Indenture was
acknowledged by Joseph White and ordered to be recorded and
Elizabeth White wife of said Joseph White personally appeared in
Court and was privately examined and voluntarily relinguished
her Right of Dower in Lands and Premises conveyed by said
Indenture.
Test---John Pride D. Cl.
The witnesses to the above deed, Moses Hurt, Junr., Absalom Hurt
and Zacheus Hurt, were brothers of Elizabeth Hurt White.
To my mine, with the above additional data, it is inescapable to
conclude that Joseph White was the husband of Elizabeth Hurt
White, daughter of Moses Hurt, Sr., rather than John White, as I
have it in my original record number 79."

"In one other, earlier Deed, also gives circumstantial proof
that it was Joseph White, not John White who was the son-in-law
of Moses Hurt, Sr. This Deed (Amelia Co., Va., Deed Bk. 7, p.
168) was dated 1759, & was from John White to Joseph White, &
was witnessed by Elizabeth's father, Moses Hurt, Sr. & by her
brother Moses Hurt, Jr., as well as by Nathaniel Chambers. Also
in the will of Moses Hurt, Sr. (1783) he left to his daughter,
Elizabeth White, a "negro woman, Hannah & her children that she
has in her possession).. In the 1782 Tax List for Amelia Co.,
Va., Joseph White is listed as owning or possessing a negro
woman, Hannah. (See Personal Property Taxes, 1782 in list taken
by Raleigh Carter.) Known children of Joseph White & Elizabeth
"Betty" White, were: (1) John, who married Martha Phillips; (2)
Mary who married John McCallough (in Washington County); (3)
Joseph, Jr.; and Moses White, who died in Washington Co., in
1797. There probably were other children."
