Notes

#8597: History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky, ed. by William Henry Perrin, O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, 1882. p. 445

[Bourbon County] LITTLEBERRY BEDFORD, Surveyor; P. O. Paris; is the grandson of Littleberry Bedford, the pioneer and hunter of Bourbon County. The parents of our subject were Littleberry and Cicely (Rollins) Bedford. Littleberry was born on the Patsey Clay farm July 30, 1798; his wife Cicely, Jan'y 30 the same year (1798).

The father of our subject after his marriage, settled on the land now owned by the Buckner heirs, near Cane Ridge. He remained here several years, and finally located on a portion of
the old homestead, where he remained until his death, Jan. 23, 1880; his wife died in 1843.

Upon this old homestead our subject first saw the light of day, February, 1821; he had six brothers and sisters, viz: Elizabeth, who married Smith Lindsey, of Clintonville; Mary, Mrs. James C. Garrard, of Pendleton County; Caroline, wife of Samuel Pryor of this precinct, Thomas F., located in Missouri; William P. and Webster C., are teachers.

Our subject at the age of twenty-one, began teaching, continuing regularly for about ten years, having taught in all about sixteen years. In 1861 he began the vocation of Surveyor, and has since been engaged in the business, and is one of the best in the country. Dec. 24, 1873, he married Miss Fannie Horton, a native of Lexington, Miss. She was a daughter of Memuca and
Claramond (Harvey) Horton, who were natives of Georgia. To Mr. and Mrs. Horton, were born five children: Martha, who married Judge Montgomery, of Lexington, Miss. Next in order was Mrs. Bedford; William and George, were killed in the Southern army; Willis B., the youngest, graduated with honors at Edinburg College in Scotland; he now resides in Tucson, Arizona Territory.

Since March, 1874, Mr. Bedford has resided on the Jackstown pike, where he has a snug home. he has no children. As relics, he possesses his grandfather's guns; and other articles once in his possession, which are rare and interesting.

Notes

Colonial Families of the United States of America: Volume 2, p.142: CAPTAIN RICHARD BOOKER of Gloucester Co., Va., Ye parrish of Abingdon. Large landowner by inheritance and grants. Grants to him recorded July, 1685, 20th Apr. 1694, and 20th Oct. 1704. From earliest land grants, 1623, to the Revolution, there was not a land grant to any BOOKER, except to this immediate family. (Va. Hist. Mag. 1900.) m. (firstly) Rebecca LEAKE, dau. of John LEAKE; m. (secondly) Hannah HAND, dau. of Richard and Frances (PUREFOY) HAND, and widow of Capt. Wm. MARSHALL.

From Joseph Eggleston, George E. Booker and John Agee Booker, "Some Booker Genealogy," Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Genealogies of Virginia Families, vol. 1, FTM CD187, Virginia Genealogies #3, p. 164: "Edward Booker was the father of Captain Richard Booker an actual resident of the Colony. The proof that Richard Booker was a son of Edward is presumptive, but it is now generally accepted that he was. In 1699 Richard Booker was appointed by his Excellency, the Governor of the Colony as Military Captain of Gloucester County. He was Justice of the Court of Gloucester County in 1698 and was a member of the Quorum. Richard Booker was born probably in England and named probably for his uncle, Richard Glover. The date when he settled in Virginia is not known. Captain Richard Booker is alluded to in a York County record as being of "Ye Parish of Abingdon, in Ye county of Gloucester" and on the upper side of Fellgate's Creek. On July 1685 (L. Book 7, p. 540) Captain Richard Booker received a grant of 740 acres in Gloucester County. On April 20, 1694 a grant of 180 acres in Gloucester County and on October 20, 1704 a grant of 613 acres in Essex County.

Captain Richard Booker married first Rebecca Leake, and secondly in 1694 Hannah Hand Marshall, widow of Captain William Marshall, Justice of Elizabeth City County, formerly of Barbadoes. Hannah Hand was the daughter of Richard Hand (died c. 1689) and Frances Purefoy Hand. Frances Purefoy was the daughter of Thomas Purefoy II who was the son of Captain Thos. Purefoy. Captain Thos. Purefoy was the son of Humphrie and grandson of Sir Nicholas Purefoy of royal descent. Capt. Thos. Purefoy was born in England (c. 1581) and he came to Virginia in the George in 1621. He was a principal commander of Elizabeth City County in 1628 and burgess from the lower part of Elizabeth City County in 1629-30; he was also a member of the Governor's Council in 1631. According to Burke, the Purefoy's of the extinct barony of that name, had a seat in Leicestershire called 'Drayton.' Thomas Purefoy of Virginia, named one of his plantations 'Drayton.'"

From "The Tabb Family," William and Mary Quarterly, Genealogies of Virginia Families Vol. IV, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982, Broderbund CD186, Virginia Genealogies #2, p. 681:
Richard Booker was probably son of Edward Booker, first named, who, perhaps, married Miss Glover. He had issue by his first wife, Rebecca -------: (1) Edmund; (2) Judith; (3) Edward, baptized June 2, 1680; (4) Richard; (5) Ann; (6) Richard, baptized October 29, 1688; (7) John, baptized August 3, 1690.

He had issue by his second wife, Hannah Hand: (8) Frances, married ------- Stokes, who lived in Amelia county, and whose will, recorded about 1752, elucidates the Booker pedigree by numberous legacies to 'her brother and sisters' children and their children'; (9) George."
