Notes


One of the first permanent settlers in the Mason, TN area was Peter Randolph Bland. He along with wife, Sally, and his sister, Mrs. Sally Dickens Bland Brodnax, and her son, Richard Thomas Brodnax, left Nottoway Co, Virginia in 1824 to come to Tennessee. The Blands settled in Fayette County about three miles from Mason just north of Belmont. Peter R. Bland was a young lawyer when he first migrated to the area but later became a Presbyterian minister. The Blands were among the most noted and influential families in colonial Virginia.

Notes


"Walter Flood (John, his father ) born about 1656, was sent to England to be educated and was placed under the guardianship of John Cary who gave bond, 16 Dec. 1671, to Lt. Col. George Jordan and Capt. Thomas Flood " to take care of Walter Flood when he arrives in England, to keep him in school and teach and educate him as his wife's brother". By 1 Jan. 1677/8 Walter was of legal age and he released his attorneys, John Cary and Benjamin Harrison, from responsibility. He was a member of a troop of horse in Surry County 1687.


He married Ann Browne, daughter of Maj. William Browne of Four Mile Tree, Surry County. He held 850 acres in Surry County, 1704, and was a justice there, 1714. He left a will 14 Oct. 1722-25 Nov. 1722, and his widow left a will 20 March 1722/23.


Their children were John, Walter, Fortune, Mary, William and Ann Cocke. [S87] [S87]
