Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War, p.74
HIGGINBOTHAM, JAMES.--Amherst, Dec., 1832. Satisfactorily shown
to the Court of Monthly Sessions that the said Higginbotham
entered the Virginia service as Major of militia in 1776,
serving around Williamsburg and continuing in duty as such till
about 1778, when he was promoted to be Colonel (?), of the Ninth
Regiment, Virginia Continentals. Continued to serve, principally
as recruiting officer, till the close of the war. Shown also
that said Higginbotham died intestate about March, 1813, aged
above eighty years, leaving as heirs, Joseph C. Higginbotham,
George W. Higginbotham, James Higginbotham, and Judith
(Higginbotham) Dillard, but that letters of administration of
his estate have never been granted. Virginia Militia in the
Revolutionary War, McAllister Publishing Co., Hot Springs, VA:
1913.
For details on the descendants of this family, see the Sweeny's
book "The Higginbotham Family" which covers several generations
down to Mr. and Mrs. Sweeny.
He owned some of the land now included in the Sweet Briar tract.
