Mother: BLANCHE PLANTAGENET of Lancaster |
On his father's death in Feb 1399, Henry succeeded him as Duke
of Lancaster, Earl of Lincoln and Leicester, and the banishment
was rescinded. He returned to England at the end of June and
deposed his cousin King Richard II. He was declared King of
England by parliament on 30 Sep 1399, as Henry IV, and crowned
King of England on 13 Oct 1399.
He had seven children by his wife, Mary Bohun, whom he married
in 1380, before she died in 1394. Richard II had confiscated the
lands of John of Gaunt which prompted Henry to return from his
exile while the king was away. Henry deposed Richard II and took
the crown for himself in 1399. The majority of Henry's reign
was spent dealing with rebellions. Immediately the supporters of
Richard revolted. The Welsh revolted from 1400-1408; the Scots
rebelled throughout his entire reign (as usual); the families of
Percy and Mortimer felt they had a stronger claim to the throne
and rebelled; the Archbishop of York, Richard Scrope, declared
his opposition to the claim of the Lancastrians.
Henry remarried to Joan of Navarre, but the marriage was very
unpopular because the people believed that she practiced
necromancy. He also had Thomas Mawbray and Richard Scrope
executed for treason. These blunders and the panicked rebellions
that followed forced Henry to turn to Parliament for money so he
could afford to put them down. During his reign the House of
Commons won the rights of freedom of debate and freedom of
dissenting opinions. The protestant movement also gained
momentum during his reign. Henry's second wife, Joan of
Navarre, was convicted of witchcraft in 1419.
Henry developed leprosy and epilepsy in his later years and
spent his final two unable to govern. During this time his
oldest son, Prince Henry, controlled the government. Henry IV
died in 1413 in Westminster Abbey leaving his eldest son as the
undisputed heir to the throne.
