Nicholas and Peter LeHeup From: Russell Layhew, Date: 19 Sep 2002: "Seeking land records for Nicholas Leheup, sometimes found spelled Lahugh and Lehew. In PETER LEHEW OF FRONT ROYAL, VA AND SOME OF HIS DESC., pub 1966 by Edith Foster, she states the earliest records found for Nicholas Lahugh are 1688 in Northumberland County, VA....what records can this be? I find Nicholas' probate record in 1719 in Northumberland County, with Peter and relict Mary Lehugh Administrators. Peter is on Cedar Run early 1720's...Can anyone help me?? Are there comprehensive lists of Huguenots who migrated prior to 1688??? Please contact me at [email protected] Thanks, Russ Layhew

Nicolas LeHugh is from a small town in Eastern France, near the German/Austrian border.

1. Nicholas LeHugh was born about 1670 in France. He died in 1718 in Northumberland, Virginia. First appears in Northumberland County, Virginia, records as early as 1688 and up until Feb 1719 when his son Peter and his wife Mary of Wicomico Parish appeared in court to swear that Nicholas had died without leaving a will and were appointed administrators of the estate. Nicholas' estate seems to have consisted of an 80-acre farm and considerable personal property. A 1722 record shows Mary, widow of Nicholas, making a declaration regarding the release of her dower rights to the land, which she and Peter, of "Wiccocomoco" Parish in Northumberland County, sold to John Jordan. The inventory of Nicholas' personal property is recorded in Northumberland County Record Book for 1718-1726 and includes 3 slaves, plus the infant of one of them.

Northumberland County, Virginia, Court Order Book, Page 17 - 21 Jun 1699- George Dunken Servant to Nicholas LeHugh being brought to this Court to be adjudged is by the Court adjudged to be 16 years of age and ordered he serve his said Master or his Assignees according to law.

William West, George Berratt and Nicholas LeHugh do in Court Oblige themselves their heirs & Executors Jointly and Separately to the Justice(s) of Northumberland County Court in the penal sum of Ten thousand pounds of Tobacco & Cask that the said West shall duly Administrator on the said Orland's Estate according to Law.

Northumberland County, Virginia, Court Order Book, Page 177 - 16 Oct 1701- Upon the Motion of Richard Lattemore, Executor A Probate is granted him of the Last Will and Testament of John Evans deceased the said Will being proved by the Oaths of William Nelmes and Nicholas Lehugh Witnesses thereto and the same is Admitted to Record.

Additional information from Peter Lehew of Front Royal, Virginia, by James Huston LeHue and Edith Foster, 1967, page 6. Nicholas married Mary. Mary was born about 1670.

"SOURCES: Mrs. Walter's chart #1 upper right hand corner says his will dated 1 Nov 1727 probated 5 Aug 1730 in Princess Anne Co. Deed Bk. 4: 300. Evidently probate does not mention any wives beside Hannah [Hack], nor any child listed besides Edward Hack Moseley.

Hillary was alive and acting on 2 Sept 1729: witnessing a Princess Anne Co. Loose Paper see Creecy, p.1. After widow Hannah remarried Col. Alexander McKensie of Elizabeth City, VA, McKensie named guardian of Edward Hack Moseley, but no other child mentioned then either
Princess Anne Co. VA Deed Bk 4: 300 will of Hillary.

Probate: the reference (in Alice G. Walter's Moseley chart #1 upper right hand corner) to Hillary Moseley's probate proceeding of 5 Aug 1730.

The Quarles file in SC archives, columbia SC, according to L.Andrea's Moseley files LDS film 0954556 end and start of 0954557: says his name was john hillary moseley, but mrs. quarles was not careful with providing any documentation for most of her assertions and we've specifically looked at the princess anne co va original microfilmed records for any possible use of the name john hillary--and there's certainly NOT any such in original documents where it'd likely be (where his father giving him land etc)
WHY BORN bef 1686?: Erroneously assuming he was already an adult 1 feb 1703/4 when his dad gave him and his sister gifts in Princess Anne Deed book 1: 378. 1st definitely adult document we see: pr ann court Minute Bk 2: 246 of may 1717 which would mean born bef 1697. We removed"bef 1686"since it seems it apparentl is related to Walter's mistake that his father's will was 1705 instead of 1735.

The gifts of feb 1703/4 probably were when their mother died, not because the kids were of age."

Nancy TALIAFERRO

ABT 1764 - ____

ID Number: I53197

Father: Zachariah TALIAFERRO Sr.
Mother: Mary Braxton BOUTWELL

Family 1 : Thompson WATKINS
  1.  Zachariah WATKINS
  2.  James WATKINS

Notes

"Nancy Taliaferro married Thompson Watkins. She was a very industrious, economical woman. By her exertions she made her husband a citizen of property. They lived a mile or two from Broad River, and near Mrs. Sally Harvie's, Mrs. Watkins's sister. They had but two children. Zachariah, the oldest, married Edna Bibb, the daughter of Mr. Peyton Bibb. James married Martha Marks, daughter of Mr. Meriwether Marks. Francis Taliaferro married Moses Penn. They removed from Virginia many years after the first settlement was made on Broad River by their relations, and fixed their abode between the North and South Rivers, whose confluence make Broad River, where Mr. Penn died soon after. Mrs. Penn was a good woman, a kind and affectionate mother, and most enthusiastic Methodist. One of her daughters married the Rev. Dabney Jones, whose long continued efforts to lessen the evils of drunkenness --- the disgrace of our glorious country entitle him to be called on of its great benefactors. Another of Mrs. Penn's daughters married Mr. Edward Ware, who proved himself a good husband and kind father. Mrs. Penn's son, Richard was a very respectable citizen."
