"Parish of Rocaven, townland of Balancard, County Antrim, Ireland. The McComb family record indicates that Jacob Shaw McComb "landed in America Oct. 3, 1798, Charleston, SC, with a passage of six weeks from Cove of Cork, Ireland, fourteen weeks from Greenoch in Scotland". He was educated for the ministry in Glasgow, Scotland, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, but abandoned the ministry in favor of the teaching profession for which he is said to have had a great talent in imparting knowledge to others. He had refinement in manner, dress and department, and stressed education for all of his children (Cotten Picking, pg 42).
Per email from Nancy in CA, [email protected], a McComb descendant. Said this was family lore.
"After college, Jacob Shaw McComb signed on as a deck hand to come to America. The first day in port in New York, his brother, WIlliam, came down to the docks. Jacob Shaw decided to jump ship. They headed South to Spanish territory where they married. After William died, Jacob Shaw brought his children to Missouri with him."
McComb children info from email from Nancy in CA, who cites 1840 Census of Miller Co., MO by Robt McKinley and Judge Jenkins History of Miller Co MO Marriage Records
Per 1850 Census, Jacob Shaw McComb lived with daughter Catherine Shaw McComb Hobson Cotten and her husband Thomas Wadlington Cotten. Cotten Picking page 153.
