Notes

"Founding fathers of Knoxville were of Ulster vintage - James White, his grandfather was from Londonderry, and John Adair and George McNutt, born Ballymena, Co Antrim.
George came here with his brother William as advance agents for some kinspeople. Tradition has it that both brothers were in the battle of King's Mountain. (Those names are on the list of men who fought there.) William went to the Northwest, and George, who was three times married and had a numerous family, settled near Knoxville, Tennessee.
Source: A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia by Oren F. Morton, published in 1920.

"An Alexander MacNaught came to the colonies [America] in 1699 and settled near Hagerstown, Maryland. He later moved to Orange County, Virginia [1743]. He died at Lexington, Virginia at the home of his brother John.

Another McNutt, William later moved to Illinois. By 1785, George McNutt with his cousin, Benjamin left Virginia to settle the "Irish Bottoms" settlement in Jefferson County, Tennessee, near the French Broad River. A daughter, Jane [Jenny] was the first white child born south of the French Broad. George McNutt and his second wife, Catherine Kain, had one daughter named Mary. He had seven children by his first wife, Isabella, and one son by his third wife. He died on January 5, 1823 and is buried at the Knox County, Tennessee Cemetery."

"Cathy Stover: Received this info from a descendent of George McNutt of Knoxville, Tn.
" I saw my friend who lives on the George McNutt land yesterday at DAR, and she says they have never been able to trace his family back further than Knox Co. "
Might be fun to try to decide who George and William belong to. Might have to check immigration and Ulster Ireland records. Will try to transcribe George's will. The writing is not easy for me to read. Might look for William in Illinois someday. A William McNutt purchased land in Edgar Co., Illinois in 1852, but believe George's brother, William's purchases were made at an earlier date. The 1852 Edgar Co., Illinois purchase was made on a bounty warrant which is interesting.
Have a list of the graves in the cemetery George McNutt is buried in in Knoxville, TN."
