Mother: Hannah CULLIATT |
Col. McCants died at his plantation "Snee Farm" near Mount
Pleasant SC after an illness of a few hours in the 59th year of
his age. his will is recorded in the probabe court, Charleston,
SC. It was made Sep 7 1858, and recorded Dec 18, 1858. Wit:
Archibald Campbell & John Porteus Deveaux.
William was a planter of Christ Church Parish at the time of his
death. In 1832 he was one of the converts on Edisto Island
under the preaching of Rev. Daniel Baker, D.D. and he became an
active and efficient member of the John's Island Church until
his removal to Christ church Parish where he connected with the
Wappetaw Church. Nothing remains of this church except the
deserted churchyard. This is beautifully situated in a live oak
grove, Christ Church Parish, on the Georgetown Road, Wando Neck,
abt 17 miles form Charleston, SC and three miles from Sewee Bay,
and near Wappetaw bridge.
During the revolution, Tarlton and his Legion occupied the
church as barracks. They burnt it when they were evacuating
Charleston in 1782. All the books and records of the church
appear to have been destroyed at the same time. the Church
silver and linen are now in the possession of the church at
McClallanville, SC. (Ref: S.C.H. & G. Mag. Vol. 25, No. 3, July
1924, pp. 136-138).
