The next son was named St. Clair Mackintosh, after my mother's
brother. He was a strikingly hansome man, of strong personality,
making friends for himself of all who knew him. He was educated
at West Point, was a soldier by nature, but to gratify his
father, he gave up his inclination for the army, and was made a
junior partner in the Wholesale Merchantile business of Morgan &
Co. When the war of the rebellion broke out, he was among the
first to enlist in the regiment raised by Maj. Hieman and was
made Captain by election, of one of the companies. He was
captured at the fall of Ft. Donaldson, carried a prisoner to
Johnson's Island, was exchanged just in time to participate in
the Battle of Chickumaugua, where he was killed, gallantly
leading his company in a charge against the enemy. He was buried
on the battlefield of Chickumaugua by his own request. He
married Miss Ida Pope of Memphis who survived him; he had three
children, Sam, Louie and Judith
