Notes

William COPAS, a Revolutionary War soldier, resided in Berkeley County, Virginia, (1863West Virginia) when he was drafted into the Revolutionary Militia. After the war and prior to 1801, he moved with three sons and a daughter to Sullivan County, Tennessee. The family soon expanded into Washington County, Tennessee. About 1840, three of William's children and many of his grandchildren moved to Monroe County, Kentucky. Those branches soon expanded into Clay (then Jackson County), Tennessee.

The various branches of William's family proceeded to populate the counties of Sullivan, Washington, and Clay Counties, Tennessee, and Monroe County, Kentucky. Other branches went west, notably to Missouri, Kansas, and Texas, but the core of William COPAS' family remained and still today remains in Tennessee and Kentucky. Surname spellings vary from COPAS, COPASS, COPUS, COPAUS, to COPESS, but all are connected.

Cheryl A. Notes

"John Benham HIGGINBOTHAM, owned the farm where downtown Bluefield now sits. In1882, for a token payment, John Benham HIGGINBOTHAM deeded a right-of-way across his farm to the Norfolk & Western Railroad (N&W had just purchased some rich coalfields at Pocahontas). The railroad made a "flag stop" on the farm and named it "Higginbotham Summit". Initially the post office for the growing community was in the Higginbotham home. The community was incorporated in 1889 (the year John Benham HIGGINBOTHAM died). The main business street in town which ran right in front of the Higginbotham home remained Higginbotham Avenue for many years after this, but is now Federal Street." [S177]

The LW&T of Col. Barnaby McKinnie dated 13 Aug 1737 devised tract of land to dau Mourning which said Mourning intermarried with John Pope and had issue: Henry Pope and Burwell Pope since which said Henry Pope is dead and said land descended to Burwell Pope. 22 Feb 1775 Deed Book 13 p 325 Halifax Co.NC.
Burwell Pope and wife Pricilla Wootten for 380 pounds proclamation maoney, sells to Long 200 acres in Halifax Co.

Barnaby McKinnie of Chowan County, N. Carolina, was the father of Sarah, wife
of Isaac Ricks - and her Mother was Mary Exum. This was taken from the land
records of North Carolina.
He conveyed by gift to his son-in-law, Isaac Ricks, March 28, 1722, 100 acres of land in Chaledonna Woods, called Napin Work, patented by Nathaniel Holly.

He first appeared in the Colony in 1720, and settled in Caledony Woods, at or near Coneconary Swamp, then in Chowas Precinct, and after 1722, in Bertie Precinct, and 1741 in Edgecombe County, then in Halifax. The name of Barnaby McKinne does not appear on the old Quaker Books of Chuckatuck.

On the land records of Edmonton, the county seat of Chowan, can be found several deeds running to Barnaby Mckinnie from 1710-1722.
