Notes for GERMAN POLK COOMER:
The Rev. G. P. Comer, a Waco evangelist who based a radio broadcast out of Dallas, died from complications of a stroke on Friday, Oct. 6 at the St. Elizabeth Nursing Home in Waco. Services for Comer, who was 85, were Monday, Oct. 9 at the Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home Chapel in Waco with burial in the Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas.
Comer's flashy appearance and fiery speeches quickly earned him the nicknames "Dixie Fireball" and "The Kentucky Wonder", as well as a wide following on the evangelist circuit. Many also knew him as "The Singing Parson" who led carols each Christmas at Nieman-Marcus and other locations.
Born July 18, 1904 in Adair County, Comer, became a Methodist at age 12. He attended Lindsey Wilson College and Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Comer was appointed pastor of Waco's First Methodist Church in 1936. He said in a 1982 interview that he left the church in 1946 to become an evangelist because he had a "definite feeling that God was calling me to this field". In 1955, he joined the First Baptist Church and the Southern Baptist Convention. After serving the SBC as an evangelist for several years, comer returned to Waco in 1964 to become pastor of the non-denominational Community Church.
He later moved to Dallas to preach on a 45 minute weekly radio broadcast called "The Country Parson", commuting to Waco's Community Church three times a week. Former Kentucky Gov. Martha Layne Collins designated Comer a Kentucky Colonel for his achievements.
