FAMILY OF MISSOURI ESTES AND PICKENS PATTON

MISSOURI ESTES was born June 04, 1825 in Boueff, Franklin County, Missouri, and died April 26, 1895 in Boerne, Kendall County, Texas.  She is probably buried in the Patton Cemetery, Cherry/Curry's Creek, Kendall County, Texas. She married PICKENS PATTON June 05, 1845 in Ellison's Mill (is this Elliot's Landing?), Bowie County, Republic of Texas, son of SAMUEL PATTON and SARAH STEPHENSON. He was born December 05, 1821 in Jonesboro, Jefferson County, Alabama, and died August 22, 1893 in Cherry/Curry's Creek, Kendall County, Texas.  He is buried in the Patton Cemetery, Cherry/Curry's Creek, Kendall County, Texas.

Notes for PICKENS PATTON:

FAMILY OF LUCINDA ESTES AND JOSEPH H. REED

LUCINDA ESTES was born February 23, 1827 in Boeuff, Franklin County, Missouri, and died after January 31, 1852 in Navarro/Hill County, Texas. She married (1) JOSEPH H. REED November 10, 1843 in probably New Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Neosho, Newton County, Missouri, son of JOHN REED and MARY. He was born November 27, 1820 in Washington County, Arkansas, and died November 14, 1846 in Red River/Bowie/Cass County, Republic of Texas (did he die at Elliot's Landing?). She married (2) WILLIAM M. HOWARD October 15, 1848 in Navarro County, Texas - Marriage Book A, p. 7 by N.T. Byers, son of HUSBAND HOWARD and PATIENCE (?) HOWARD. He was born about 1822 in Missouri-last found on Hood Co. Tax rolls 1882 or 1883.

Notes for LUCINDA ESTES:

TAKEN FROM OLD NORTHWEST TEXAS, HISTORICAL-STATISTICAL-BIOGRAPHICAL, NAVARRO COUNTY, TEXAS 1846-1860 COMPILED BY NANCY SAMUELS AND BARBARA KNOX, PUBLISHED BY THE FORT WORTH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY.

"Born in Missouri about 1827 according to the 1850 census; she is listed as widow Lucinda Reed on NCTxR1, also 1848; she married January 15 or October 15, 1848, William Howard, in whose household Hiram Lee (son of Lilburn K. Lee) was enumerated on the 1860 census of Hill County. Lucinda died about 1852-53 and William Howard married Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison."

(NOTE: In Old Northwest Texas, she is incorrectly listed under the Ephraim Lee family, page 496.)

According to Edwin Burleson Reed's granddaughter, Patricia Ballew Vernon, she had always heard that the Howard children went back to "Indian Territory" which she took to mean that they moved up to the Red River area around Grayson County or somewhere up there, or back to Missouri.

It must also be noted that Lucinda is omitted from the family record submitted by Li Ann Carter in "Pioneers of the Six Bulls" by the Newton County, Missouri Historial Society. The only child included with a birthdate close to her's is a Thomas L. Estes of which I can find no other record. Lucinda, however, did exist for without her, I would not be here! She was the mother of my 2nd great grandfather, Francis Marion Reed. I have not been able to locate a marriage record for her marriage to Joseph H. Reed even though logic would dictate they were married in Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Newton County, Missouri as that is where her husband and his family were members prior to their removal to Texas. She is mentioned in her father Hiram Estes' probate that is extant in the courthouse in Navarro County, Texas. I cannot however locate neither her's nor Hiram's graves. Nor can I locate where her first husband, F.M. Reed's father died although it is said to be in Texas.

ON OCTOBER 21, 1996 I RECEIVED A COPY OF LUCINDA'S BIBLE RECORD which reads as follows:

Great-Grandmother Mahala Reed's Bible. Given to F.M. Reed by his Mother, then F.M. Reed gave this to son J.A. (Boss) Reed in the year 1908. (This is also written inside the cover of the bible by (probably) Ima Reed, Boss' daughter.

After Malachi and the end of the old Testament is written Benjamin H. Reed was born June the 24 1815 or 1816 (pretty dim) and below is written Benjime. On the next page is written:

Frances Marien was bornd Novembar the 27th 1845

Edward B. Estes was bornd march the 8th 1845

Joseph H. Reede was bornd Novembar the 27th 1820

Lusinday Estes was bornd Febuary the 23th 1827

George Howard was born August the 31st 1849

Nancy Howard was born January the 31st day 1852

Then on a blank page opposite the New Testament Title page is written:

Joseph H. Reede died the 17 day of Novembar in theyear of our lord 1846

Lucy Estes died July the 17 day in the year of ower lord 184? (looks to be 1847 or 1849)

Hesterann Estes died Oct the 26 day in the yeare of ower lord 1846

Hiram S. Estes died (again very dim-looks like) 1849?

Then on another bible page that is blank:

Joseph H. Reede and Lusinday Estes was married novembar the 10th 1843

Frances M. Reede was bornd Novembar the 27th 1845

Wm. Howard and Lucinda Reed was married October the 15th 1848

The Bible is missing the 1st 50 or so pages.  The New Testament page reads as follows:

The NEW TESTAMENT of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: Translated out of the Originial Greek and with the Former Translations diligently compared and revised.

New York, Published by the American Bible Society, Daniel Fanshaw, Printer, No. 20 Sloat-lane, Sterotyped by E.&J. White, 1819

Notes for JOSEPH H. REED:

SOURCE OF THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS: A HISTORY OF HILL COUNTY 1853 - 1980 PUBLISHED BY THE HILL COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION.

"In 1848, L. K. Lee, his wife and Fannie Estes, and their three children, Palmira, Hiram and Lucy from Missouri were the first known land grant settlers to arrive. It was necessary for them to cross Richland Creek, which was inhabited by the Tonkawa Indians. The crossing was made without incident. Mrs. Lee was the first white woman to set foot on the west side of Richland Creek, near Pelham, Texas.

Mrs. Lucinda Estes Reed and her infant son, Francis Marion, are believed to have been with the Lees. Mrs. Reed's husband, Joseph H. Reed, died in Cass County, Texas, enroute with the Missouri settlers to claim their land grants. These certificates were issued April 15, 1850. Talmage Melton holds the Lee document. Most of this land is in the hands of heirs. Vivian Reed holds the Reed document."

According to Thomas R. Reed of Lubbock, Texas, he now holds the land grant certificate. He also relates that Joseph is buried along the Red River. About the Reed origins, he tells that several Reed brothers came to the U.S. from England. At that time, they scattered to the four winds and did not keep up with each other.

Notes on William Howard:

TAKEN FROM OLD NORTHWEST TEXAS, HISTORICAL-STATISTICAL-BIOGRAPHICAL, NAVARRO COUNTY, TEXAS 1846-1860 COMPILED BY NANCY SAMUELS AND BARBARA KNOX, PUBLISHED BY THE FORT WORTH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY.

"Undoubtedly the son of Patience Howard; lived next to her on 1850 census in Navarro County; lived in Hill County in 1860 (White Rock PO). On RCTxR1 1845 is Will Howard; on NCTxR1s 1845-48 is William Howard; in 1849 W.R. Howard; in 1850 William Howard. In 1849 William and Nacy Howard on jury list; in 1850 W.R. and Nacy Howard on jury list.

William Howard, born about 1822-23 in Missouri; evidently married his first wife about 1845, wife's name is unknown. He married his second wife, Mrs. Lucinda Reed who was probably the mother of George and Nancy Howard. Lucinda was born about 1827 in Missouri, is on the NCTxR1 1847, evidently a young widow; she must have died about 1852-53. William Howard married his third wife on September 18, 1853, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison, born about 1831 in Illinois, who is enumerated as his wife on the 1860 census of Hill County. His apparent children:

1. Francis Marion, born about 1845-46 in Robertson/Navarro County, Texas; is enumerated in his father's household in 1850 and 1860. (I believe this is in reality Francis Marion Reed, son of Lucinda & Joseph Reed).

2. George Howard, born about 1849, Navarro County; is enumerated in his father's household in 1850 and 1860.

3. Martha Howard, born about 1849, not shown on the 1850 census, but is on the 1860 census, same age as George. Though she was enumerated as Howard, perhaps she actually Martha Harrison, child of Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison Howard? In Hill County, one Mattie Harrison married G.N. Oliver on February 25, 1877.

4. Nancy Howard, born about 1852, may have been the Nancy M. Howard who married in Hill County on September 11, 1873 to John T. Mock, born about 1852 in Mississippi, son of Moses Mock.

                        5. Patience Howard, born about 1856; married in Hill County August 6, 1873 to J.R. Bryant.

                        6. William Howard, born about 1858 in Hill County.

Perhaps there were other children after 1860; family is not found on 1870 Hill County census. Also living in William Howard's household in 1860 was Hiram Lee, born about 1840 in Missouri. Not identified is the Jas/Jos Howard, age 12, enumerated with William Bruten in Hill County in 1860. The Howards listed on the 1845 RCTxR1 do not appear on the 1846 roll; thus, it is evident that in 1845 they may have lived in the upper portion of the original county.  References: RC&NCTxR1s; NCMgs; HCMgs; 1860-70 Hill County censuses."

TAKEN FROM A HISTORY OF HILL COUNTY TEXAS 1846-1860 PUBLISHED BY THE HILL COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION.

"Serving as a private in the Civil War, he joined the 28th Brigade, Texas Militia organized under Captain J.W.P. Doyle on August 17, 1861."

FROM NAVARRO COUNTY MARRIAGE BOOK A, p. 7:

State of Texas, County of Navarro: To any regular ordained Minister of the Gospel Chief Judge or Justice of the Peace either of you are hereby authorized to solemize marriage between Wm. Howard & Mrs. Lucinda Reed and make return thereof in Sixty days to my office. given under by hand the 12th day of October. A.D. 1848. Signed R.S.(?) White, C.C.C. N.C.

Executed by me this the 15th day of Oct 1848. Signed N.T. Byars.

William Howard is next found on the 1880 Hood County, Texas Census living in household 40 with wife Elizabeth Harrison. Daughter Nancy married R.H. Addison (they are found on same census in household 42; R.H. Addison's brother, Nathaniel married Malissa Musick, who is daughter of Austin Musick and Jane Merrell. Nathaniel is also found on this census living in household 39.)
