The Nyleve family

No sign of a baptism for a George Nyleve, nor for an illegitimate son of John Evelyn, has been found in the indexes to the ecclesiastical returns from India, nor in the microfilms of pages for Calcutta (where the entries John Evelyn's marriage and the baptisms of his first two legitimate children appear), before 1790, the year that John Evelyn returned to England.

Identification of George Nyleve, husband of Keziah, and George Nyleve, son of John EVELYN and (supposedly) a woman in India (described as "half-caste" in "The History of the Evelyn Family", Evelyn, 1915; available online from http://www.archive.org/ [23/08/2010]), has been verified by the facts that
1. Keziah's husband was a painter, and the George Nyleve that died in 1843, with daughter Kezia, was an artist;
2. the George Nyleve that died in 1843 said the papers for his property in Sidmouth were with those of the late John Evelyn. In John Evelyn's own will (according to "The History of the Evelyn Family") he left a property in Sidmouth to his natural son George Nyleve.)

George NYLEVE married Keziah (Kezia) and Elizabeth BROWN and had a relationship with Matilda GATRILL

George Nyleve, husband of Keziah, lived at 61 Wood Street in 1813, 1814, 1823 (daughter's baptismal record, daughter & wife's burial records).
He lived in Hungerford Market in 1829 (daughter's baptismal record).
He lived at 3, Harvey Buildings, Strand in 1840 and 1841 (will and 1841 census).

George's occupation was given as
        "japanner" in Holden's Trinnenial Directory for 1809, 1810 and 1811,
              and in Holden's Directory for 1811;
        "painter" in a Sun insurance policy for William Roberts and George Nyleve, 61 Wood Street Cheapside, painters, dated 13 February 1815
              (MS 11936/466/904232, available at Guildhall Library);
        "painter" in his children's baptismal entries in 1814 and 1829;
        "artist" in the 1841 census;
        "artist" when his death was registered in 1843.

In 1840, when he wrote his will, George was living at 3, Harvey Buildings, Strand, London. At the time of the 1841 Census, he was at the same address with Matilda Nyleve and Mary Ann Romain, among others. In the Census, his birthplace was given as India.

The death of George Nyleve was registered on 5 May 1843 in St Mary, Newington, Surrey by Matilda Nyleve, who had been in attendance. (She is likely to be the person described as Matilda Gatrill Spinster when proving the will, of which she was a (relatively) major beneficiary.)
He died on 3 May 1843, age 58, at Amelia Street (death certificate) or Amelia Place (stated by the witnesses to his will).
If his age was correctly specified, he would have been born about 1785, two years before John Evelyn's marriage to Anne Shee, and have been about 5 years old when John Evelyn returned with Anne and their two legitimate sons to the British Isles.
His age is entered as 55 in the 1841 Census, and his profession given as Artist.
Matilda Nyleve gave 27 Amelia Street as her address when registering the death, and made her mark.
The cause of death was given as "Chronic disease of the Bowels".

George Nyleve's will (draft transcription)

Keziah (Kezia) married George NYLEVE.

Kezia died in 1823 and was buried on 9 Mar 1823 in St Alphage's, City of London.
She was described as being 36 years at the time of her burial (so born about 1787).
Her funeral was conducted by Robert Watts, Rector.
Her name is spelt Keziah in the baptismal records of her daughters in 1807 and 1809. In her younger daughters' baptismal records, and in her burial record, it is spelt Kezia.

Keziah and George Nyleve had the following children:

  F i Keziah NYLEVE was born on 24 Jul 1807 and was christened on 16 Aug 1807 in St Alphage's, City of London.

Her baptismal record was entered by Robert Watts, Rector.

  F ii Sarah NYLEVE was born on 3 Mar 1809 and was christened on 26 Mar 1809 in St Alphage's, City of London.

Her baptismal record was entered by Robert Watts, Rector.

  F iii Anne NYLEVE (Ann NYLEVE) was born on 5 Jun 1811 and was christened on 30 Jun 1811 in St Alphage's, City of London. She died in 1813 and was buried on 14 Mar 1813 in St Alphage's, City of London.

Her baptismal record is for Anne. Her burial record is for Ann, aged 20 months.
Her baptismal record was entered by Robert Watts, Rector.
At the time of her death she lived at 61 Wood Street. The funeral was conducted by Robert Watts, Rector.

  F iv

Mary NYLEVE was born on 31 Jul 1814 and was christened on 28 Aug 1814 in St Alphage's, City of London.

At the time of her baptism she lived at 61 Wood Street. The baptism was performed by Thomas Clare, Officiating Minister.

The IGI shows an entry for a marriage between Mary Nyleve and James Roman on 17 Aug 1834 in the parish of St Mary's, Lambeth, and a baptism for a Mary Ann Roman, daughter of James and Mary Roman on 28 Jun 1837 in the same parish (British Isles batches I033432 and P006282).

Mary Ann Roman is presumably the 5 year old child with George Nyleve and Matilda in the 1841 census.

(The surname is spelt Romain in the 1841 census, Romane in George Nyleve's will, and Romayne in the death duty register. There are other baptisms for children with various spellings of Roman as surname in St Mary's shown in batch P006282 (1823-1837), including an Ellen, daughter of James Roman and Mary Ann (Roman, according to British Isles batch I016583), 5 Jan 1834)

Mary and Matilda Gatrill were George Nyleve's residuary legatees.

  F v Elizabeth NYLEVE was born in 1821 and was christened on 25 Dec 1829 in Saint James, Piccadilly, London, England.

She was described as being 8 years old at her baptism; this is the source of her birth year.
At the time of her baptism, conducted by JC [?Wigram], she lived in Hungerford Market.

Elizabeth BROWN married George NYLEVE and George James PARKER

        The groom is described as full age, bachelor, Printer, living at James P, son of George Parker, Painter
        The bride is described as full age, widow, living at Princes P, daughter of William Brown, Bricklayer dec

Matilda GATRILL had a relationship with George NYLEVE, and married John STRATTON.

Matilda Gatrill was entered, as Matilda Nyleve, with an age of 30 in the 1841 Census.
If the enumerator had obeyed his instructions, she would then have been 30-34 years old.
A Matilda Gatril, daughter of Giles Gatril was baptised 7 August 1808 at Ringwood, Hampshire; she would have been 32 at the 1841 census.

Matilda GATRILL would appear to have had a relationship with George NYLEVE from at least 1840 until his death in 1843.
She is mentioned in George Nyleve's will in 1840 in preference to his wife Elizabeth. He gave her authority over his property when away from London in 1840. They were in the same household at the time of the 1841 Census.
She was in attendance at his death in 1843 and registered his death (making her mark). She, and his daughter Mary, were his residuary legatees.
She is noted as Matilda Nyleve in the 1841 Census and when registering George Nyleve's death, although described in his will and the Death Duty Register as Gatrill.

A Matilda Gatrill, daughter of Giles Gatrill married John Stratton, son of William Stratton, on 25 December 1843 at St. Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey, England
