Some Descendants of Christopher AVERY

Eighth Generation

(Continued)

6940. Peleg Morgan BROWN (Eleazer BROWN , Experience MORGAN , Timothy MORGAN , Hannah AVERY , James , James , Christopher ) was born 1814 in West Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York. He died 6 Apr 1884 in Binghamton, Broome Co., New York and was buried in Glen Castle Cemetery, Broome Co., New York.

 Death info from Broome Co. Surrogate Court. Film No. 809370. Estate No. 395;
Date of Letters, Aug. 11, 1884, Letters of Administration, Book 3, Page 345.
Brown says Peleg M. born in 1814, which jibes closely with 1855 census below,
so DAR reading of tombstone (below) may be an error.

1855 census says Peleg was 38, b. Herkimer Co., and lived in Broome Co. 22
years, so presumably he left Herkimer in 1833. 1855 census says wife Lura
also was born in Herkimer.

Film 837,367, Vol. 107, DAR record for Glen Castle Cemetery, on U.S. Highway
Route 11 between Binghamton and Whitney Point in Twp. of Chenango, lists:
  Ida Brown
Louis Brown, son of P.M. and Lura, d. Aug 3, 1873, ae 19
  Frances Brown
  Nancy Brown
Nancy Ann Lee, wife of Peleg Brown, d. Nov. 22, 1848, ae 32
  Peleg Brown d. April 6, 1884, ae 79 (Born 1804 or 1805? A typo by DAR? If
age at death was 69, it could well be 1814 as birth date.)

Peleg married (1) Nancy Ann LEE. Nancy was born 1816 in Of Castle Creek, Broome Co., New York. She died 22 Nov 1848 and was buried in Glen Castle Cemetery, Broome Co., New York.

They had the following children:

  9880 M i
Son BROWN died in infancy.

  Source: B.G., Vol. II.
  9881 F ii
Frances BROWN was born 1843. She died 1845.
  9882 F iii
Ellen Elizabeth BROWN was born 26 Sep 1846.

Peleg also married (2) Lura L. FISH on 15 Apr 1849. Lura was born 1827/1829 in , Herkimer Co., New York.

Marriage listed for two dates: Film 811545 says April 16, 1849, and married by
A.J. Dana of Chenango.  Both Peleg and "Lucy"  listed from Chenango. Film
8445579, Broome County vitals, lists April 15 as date.

Gravestones (see Peleg M.) say name is Lura, not Lucy, and this jibes with an
earlier census interpretation.

They had the following children:

  9883 M iv
Frank Watson BROWN was born 22 Jan 1857 in Binghamton, Broome, NY.
  9884 F v
Clara Ida BROWN was born 21 Feb 1861. She died 12 Dec 1887 in Susquehanna, Susquehanna, PA.
  9885 M vi
Louis Alfred BROWN was born 22 Jan 1864 in Binghamton, Broome, NY. He died 3 Aug 1883.

6942. German S. BROWN (Eleazer BROWN , Experience MORGAN , Timothy MORGAN , Hannah AVERY , James , James , Christopher ) was born 1818 in West Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York. He died 30 Apr 1860 in Binghamton, New York.

Two reports about him: Operated a livery stable in Binghamton, N.Y.
Also, "lost at sea." Can't confirm either. 1850 census says he was a farmer.
Most family information comes from Edna Brown Foster, daughter of William W.
Brown. That information with Louis B. Bate, Bountiful, Utah.
Believed married about 1844, since daughter Georgianna was born in 1845.
Also, that is the year, 1855 census says, that Caroline came to Broome Co.
Probably married in New Milford, Pa., or Chenango, Broome County, N.Y.
He is found in the 1850 New York census. Film No. 017054, Page 386, Line 28, Chenango, last on the reel. Three other Browns on the same page: Eleazer, 72, farmer; Eleazer Jr., 27, farmer; and Peleg M., 35, farmer. All born
in New York. They would be his father and two brothers. Brown Gen., Vol. II,
lists German S. Brown's marriage and says he had a daughter and three sons.
Assorted deeds recorded in Broome County Clerk's Office indicate Eleazer
Brown III sold all or some of his land to sons: Hiram, Chauncey C., Peleg M.,
German S., Jerome B. and Eleazer IV. The lands were located between Chenango
and Conklin, in what is now Binghamton, Broome County, New York. The properties apparently were located on the north side of the Susquahanna River.
Details of the completed transactions, with lands being deeded back
and forth, various mortgages, etc., are found on Film 573101, Liber 40,
Page 390 (two transactions, same date Dec. 23, 1853, with German S. deeding
some land to Eleazer); Film 573104, Liber. 46, Page 485, Sept. 8, 1856, two
deals between German S. and Giles Orcutt, all Binghamton property; Film 573095, Liber 27, March 27, 1845, Eleazer III to six sons; Film 573091
(second half of reel), Liber 20, Pages 331 and 332, involving Eleazer III and
Isaac D. Lyon and his wife Ruth.

Death info from Film 809370: Broome Co. Surrogate's Office. No. of estate is 30; Date of Letters is May 5, 1860; Letters of Administration, Book L, Page 214? 1850 census name of German P. in error. All land deals say German S., as well as death record.
1855 N.Y. census taken June 14 lists age as 36, b. Herkimer Co., landowner, farmer, lived 22 years in town.  Found in census after Binghamton. Says Caroline M. had lived in town for 11 years. Since year of her marriage? It also says she was born in Pennsylvania. (Wood Family Index indicates born in New Milford.) Census says children all born in Broome Co.
Most of the information re the Brown family lineage from Edward Browne down through German S. Brown, his brothers and sisters and some of their
children comes from Brown Genealogy, Volumes I and II.

German married Caroline WOOD, daughter of William WOOD III and Betsey DARROW, about 1844. Caroline was born 16 Feb 1826 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 30 Jun 1908 in Manhattan, Riley Co., Kansas and was buried in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, Riley Co., Kansas.

Sources: Wood Family Index; Boston Evening Transcript, 11/17/30; U.S.
census records, NY (1855, 1860) and Kansas (1870, 1880); death certificate;
NY land records; newspaper obituaries; Sunset Cemetery records; probate records.

Family history says her family was Welsh. Research doesn't establish this
belief, and a belief that the family came to America in the early 1800s does
not agree with the Wood Family Index. Bess Brown Neerman, granddaughter of
Caroline, said, "Grandmother came with her father and three sisters from
Wales." That seems to be incorrect, because the Wood Index seems to be correct for this family.
I found Caroline's parents, William and Betty Darrow Wood, in Connecticut
and New Milford, PA, and her grandparents, William and Sarah Avery Wood, in CT, so that much seems correct in the Wood Index. Also found Caroline's three
sisters in the index, the names jibing with family records.
The entire Wood line, back another two generations, to John Wood in the
mid-1600s, is traced in the Wood Family Index. Appears to check out via other
sources.
1855 NY census (found after Binghamton and enumerated on June 1) says
Caroline had lived in town 11 years. (Since date of marriage about 1844? First child born in 1845).
Censuses where Caroline was head of household say she was born in PA, and
the Wood Family Index indicates she was born in New Milford, Pennsylvania.
Chenango Point later became (phrase "changed" used) Binghamton, N.Y. Broome County was split off from Chenango County in 1803.
From 1860 New York census: (Broome County film number is 803,724). Lived
in 2nd Ward, Village of Binghamton, Page No. 336 of film number above.
Widow. Husband had died just before the census (but was not in the 1860
mortality records). Real estate was valued at $5,000. Had a servant, Henry
Leander, 21, male, born in New York.
Two others lived in household: William Lantz, 18, male, marble cutter, born in Germany, and Ann Collins (spelling?), 19 or 14, female, born in New York. Also see  Films 287,878 and 287,879.

Information from Kansas censuses for 1875 and 1880:
  1875 census (1 March 1875), page 9, shows Charles G. Brown, age 24, and
mother on a farm (dwelling 169, family 176) in Vermillion Township, Marshall
County, Frankfort Post Office. She apparently owned the farm, valued at $500,
and he had personal property valued at $300. He came to Kansas from Illinois
and she from New York.
Nearby (dwelling 171, family 178 as listed in census) was another son, Fred V. Brown, 25, farmer, with wife Rebecca A. Brown, 19. He came to Kansas from New York and she came from Illinois, being born there. Fred's real estate was valued at $1,000 and his personal property at $400. He also in the 1880 census.
Did not find Caroline's eldest son, William Wellington, in the 1875 census.
1880 census for Marshall County has:
William Brown, 31, farmer, in Wells Township, with wife Mary, 29, and son
Herbutt (Herbert), 2. William and Mary came to Kansas from New York, and their son was born in Kansas, so they must have come to Kansas by 1878.
Charles G. Brown, farmer, still listed as age 24, was married and farming in Clear Fork Township. Listed also (names all screwed up but ages jibe): Wife, Annie (Nancy Ann Picket Brown), 21; Julia (Zadie Caroline), 3; Myrtie (Myrta), 1, and Dudley C. (really Fred Guy), age ?. They were listed for dwelling 2, family 4 on the census. (He and wife were married Dec. 25, 1875 in Frankfort, Marshall County, according to family records & copy of marriage certificate.)
[Also in the 1875 and 1880 censuses for Vermillion Township was William
Picket. His daughter Anna (as written in the 1875 census, but must be Nancy
Ann), was the girl, turned 17 in November, who married Charles G. Brown in
December 1875.]
Living near Charles (in dwelling 4, family 6) was brother Fred V. Brown, 30, farmer, Clear Fork Township, with wife Rebecca A., 24, and daughter
Georgia, 4. This child, unmarried, age 24 in 1900, was living with grandmother Caroline in Manhattan, Riley County, 1900 census says.
Caroline Wood Brown apparently moved to Manhattan in 1875.
She was in the 1880 census, "keeping house" in Manhattan.
Obit in "The Manhattan Republic" says she had been a Manhattan resident for 33 years. [See copy of the news article.]
Obit in the Manhattan Mentor-Mercury says she died in the Memorial Home in
Leavenworth, Kansas, July 1, 1908, age 82, of kidney and heart problems; had
been a Manhattan resident for over 30 years; born in New London, Conn. (wrong--that probably where her father was from, or was born); was very active in the Presbyterian Church. Survivors are Will Brown, Perry, Okla.;
Fred Brown, Olathe, Kans.; and C.G. Brown, Manhattan.
Edna Brown Foster writes: "Grandmother Brown worried about Will (as she
called him) working on the railroad on account of the extreme danger, so she
offered to place each of her sons on a farm (160 acres) near Manhattan. Will's farm was located near Frankfort, Kansas; Charles' farm was near Herington, and Fred's farm near Olathe. This was in the early 1870s."
Were these farms homestead land? Charles and Fred apparently were on Marshall County farms before moving on to Herington and Olathe, respectively.
Did Caroline finance these ventures from proceeds of sale of her $5,000
property in Binghamton?
Family history says her three sons went west with her to Kansas,  but the
above census info indicates only Fred could have come with her from New York.
Edna Foster says she preceded the sons.
William Wellington Brown was perhaps married back east and the other two sons came to Kansas with their mother, according to Affie Brown's recollections in Brown Gen., v.2.
Edna Brown Foster says her father, William Wellington Brown, married Mary
Dorman in the East. (Not Gorman as B.G., Vol. II, says).
Bess Brown Neerman said Caroline "came west to Kansas and put each boy on a farm. Fred dwindled money away. Will went on the railroad. (Apparently he
worked on the railroad back east, before coming to Kansas). Charles came farther west (from Herington, Dickinson Co., to Manhattan)."
A group from Binghamton, N.Y., formed a colony, moved to Kansas and named the town of Manhattan. But the town was founded in the 1850s, according to a note from Elsa Brown Bate. Edna Foster says the federal building in Manhattan now stands on what was once Caroline Brown's residence lot. And a 1904 city
directory says she resided at 413 Houston Street, an address near the present
Manhattan Post Office building.

Caroline; her son, Charles G. Brown, and his wife, Nancy Ann Picket Brown,
and their sons, Ira Clyde Brown, Charles Elmer Brown and Fred G. Brown are
buried in Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan.
  Her large brown tombstone reads:

             MOTHER
        CAROLINE M. BROWN
       DIED JUNE 30, 1909
          AGED 82 YRS.

  Nearby are buried two grandsons:

Charles E. Brown                       Ira Clyde Brown
          1888-1964                              1886-1953

They had the following children:

  9886 F i Georgianna BROWN is printed as #9642.
+ 9887 M ii William Wellington BROWN is printed as #9643.
+ 9888 M iii Frederick Vincent BROWN is printed as #9644.
+ 9889 M iv Charles German BROWN is printed as #9645.

6943. Jerome Bonaparte BROWN (Eleazer BROWN , Experience MORGAN , Timothy MORGAN , Hannah AVERY , James , James , Christopher ) was born about 1819 in West Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York. He died in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jerome had a wife named Delia C., according to land records and also the 1855
census. That census (Line 29, Binghamton, enumerated on June 14) listed ages for
both as 29 and both born in Herkimer Co. Brown says Delia Harrington. Census
sez Jerome born in 1819. Said Jerome had lived 21 years in Binghamton and Delia
eight years. She a second wife, since oldest child is 10? Probable census
error. No occupation for Jerome but an unreadable one for his wife. 1855
census lists three kids: Hiram, 10; Herman, 8; Hamilton, 6. Brown Genealogy,
Vol. II, says the third son is Burr, born in 1850, so the ages are close. Would
a man name a son Hamilton Burr? That could give a kid a split personality. Down
the line are two Thur Browns. I'll call him Hamilton Burr/Thur Brown and let his
descendants figure it out.

B.G., Vol II, says Jerome later married, at Baltimore, a widow with two
daughters.

Jerome married Delia C. HARRINGTON in Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York. Delia was born 1826 in Herkimer Co., New York.

Delia had lived in Broome Co. for eight years, while Jerome had lived there
22 years, according to 1855 census.  They married eight years before when
she came to town? Census error? Their oldest children were Hiram, 10, and
Herman, 8. Rather unlikely she was a second wife.

They had the following children:

  9894 M i
Hiram BROWN was born 1845 in Binghamton, New York.
  9895 M ii
Herman BROWN was born 1847 in Binghamton, New York.
  9896 M iii
Hamilton Burr BROWN was born 1850 in Binghamton, New York.

B.G., Vol.2, p.290. Should Burr be Thur? Eleazer IV had a son named Albert
Thur and there was another Thur down the line. 1855 New York census says the
third son was named Hamilton, 6. Will call him Hamilton Burr/Thur Brown.

6944. Eleazer BROWN (Eleazer BROWN , Experience MORGAN , Timothy MORGAN , Hannah AVERY , James , James , Christopher ) was born 14 Feb 1820 in West Winfield, Herkimer Co., New York. He died Jan 1897 in Waverly, New York.

Eleazer IV's wife was Rachel Cafferty.  A Rachel M. Brown died May 18, 1911.
Listed in the Broome County Surrogate Court records. Film No. 809370.

1855 Census (Film 809,005, found after Binghamton, enumerated June 1)
says he was a railroad worker. 1850 census says he was a farmer, and
1860 says he was a laborer.
Also, the 1855 census  said he had lived in town (Chenango?) for 22 years.

Brown, Vol.2, says born 14 Feb. 1820. Doesn't jibe with census  which makes
birth date about 1824, but that conflicts with reported 1824 birth date
listed for sister Martha Frances.

Eleazer married Rachael CAFFERTY about 1845. Rachael was born 1826 in Broome Co., New York.

They had the following children:

  9897 F i
Affie Adelaide Wilcox BROWN was born 13 Jul 1845 in Chenango, Broome Co., New York.

Never married. Was still alive at time information was provided for B.G.,
Vol. II. In the 1850 census she was reported in the household of Eleazer III at
the age of 5, also in 1860 at the age of 14 (census taken just before her 15th
birthday). Why she apparently living with her grandfather and step grandmother?
In both censuses, households of both her father and grandfather were listed on
the same page, indicating their respective farms were close together.

One child was reported in 1850 in the household of Eleazer IV and four
in 1860. Eleazer III was listed as 72 in the 1850 census and 81 in the 1860
census, and Affa listed as 60 and 75, respectively. (Little lying about age in
the latter?) They were rather elderly to be raising a child, especially when
her parents were nearby.

1850 census film number is 017054. 1860 number is 0803724.

Mary Elizabeth BROWN was born 1 Aug 1847 in Chenango, Broome Co., New York.

Source: B.G., Vol. II. Page 296. Married (1) Peter Bonnell and (2) Ira
Hagadorn. Ira was a wheelwright, and he and his wife were Methodists. Peter
"became a Christian at his mother's house, in Kirkwood, a few weeks before he
died. He was a railroad conductor all his life."  He finally got on the right
track.

Mary married (1) Peter BONNELL on 5 May 1866. Peter was born in Of Kirkwood, NY. He died May 1883.

B.G., Vol.2, sez, "He became a Christian at his mother's house, in Kirkwood, a
few weeks before he passed away. He was a railroad conductor all his life." He
finally got on the right track.

Mary also married (2) Ira HAGADORN in Hornell, NY.
