CROMWELL, Giles (Cromwell and Cromlome), liv in Salisbury, but all (two) of his children lived in NH. Tortured by general. writers -ad infin.- he was not the father of Mr. Philips, the Salem merchant, cattle buyer and butcher, nor of Capt. Thomas, the Barbadoes and Boston mariner and merchant (will 1649). His rel. to Thomas(4) is unasc., plaus. a bro.; app. Giles came over to claim Thomas's estate. The deaths credited to Newbury vital records: 'Thomas Cromlome dyed 1635, ye wife of Thomas Cromlome died 1635,' is an interpolated entry of a later period and gives an incredible year, yet may indicate that (4) and his wife died in one year. The entry in Mass. Rec. 14 June 1642: 'Crumwells girle of Newbury is referred to Ipswich Court is unexpl. Charles S. Tibbetts's hypothesis that the same Giles m. in Erling, Hampshire, 20 Feb 1629/30 Alice Weeks, is also plaus. and uninvgst.; but at Salem the will of Thomas Wickes, widow Alice, 1656, was wit by Thomas and Anna Cromwell, he app. bro of Mr. Philip the burcher, d. by dep. 1617-1625.     He returned to England with his family in 1646/7. He was buried at Bishopstoke as "Stephen Dummer, senior," on the 6th of September, 1670.
If his Will could be found, it would no doubt clear up many uncertainties, but unhappily this is now impossible. His wife, Allice Archer, must have died before 1661, when the existing Bishopstoke register begins. Her maiden name must be accepted solely on the authority of Chief Justice Sewall, which there is no reason to doubt.

He was a son of William Shepard, of Tonaster, England.

THE SHEPARD FAMILY, A GENEALOGICAL RECORD OF WILLIAM SHEPARD OF FOSSECUT AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS, by David W. Shepard, Aurora, Illinois, 1981. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, UT. page 1 & 2.
William Shepard, was born in the "little poore towne" of Fossecut, near Towcester, Northamptonshire, England. But lettle is known of him except through the "Autobiography" written by his son Thomas, and that he was early apprenticed to a Mr. Bland in the same town in the grocery business, and is described by his son Thomas as a "wise, prudent man, the peacemaker of the place, and towards his latter end was much blessed of God in his estate and in his soule."
After the expiration of his term of service, he removed to Towcester, a small town about six miles from Northampton, where it is probable all of his children were born. It is apparent that he was a man of great piety and made it his end and aim to regulate the conduct of his family by those principles endorsed by the teaching of the Holy Writ, which in after life were so forcibly exemplified in the lives of several of his immediate descendants.
Having resided in Towcester for several years and, "there being no good ministry in the Town", he removed to Banbury in Oxfordshire "under a stirring ministry, having bought a house there for that end." Here he spent the remainder of his days in peace and quietude, and died in the year 1615, being "visited at the last with sickness, having taken some cold upon some pills he tooke, and so had the Hicketo with his sickness a weeke together."
He married (1) _______ a daughter of Mr. Bland to whom he was apprenticed as a grocer; she died in 1609, revered and beloved. Her son Thomas says, "My mother was a woman much afflicted, sometimes even unto distraction of mind, yet was sweetly recovered agayne before shee died. I being the youngest, she did beare exceeding great love to me, and made many prayers for me, and died when I was about four years old." He married (2) in Towcester, ______ a woman as her step son afterwards affirmed, "who did not let me see the difference between my own mother and a stepmother; she did seeme not to love me but tried to incense my father against me."

3377. Miss.
