    Born May 4, 1586 and baptized April 16, 1688, at Stonington, New London Co., Conn. She married Dec 16, 1706, at Stonington, Conn., Thomas Minor, son of Manasseh and Lydia (More) Minor. Thomas was born Sept. 20, 1683, at Stonington, and baptized Nov. 14, of the same year, First Church of Stonington. He was also deacon of this church. In his will, made Dec. 6, 1734, he mentioned children, Thomas, Sylvanus, Jonathan, Manasseh, Hannah, Prudence, and Lydia. He died April 9, 1789, at Stonington. His widow Hannah, in her will, dated Nov. 21, 1762, mentioned son, Jonathan; daughters, Hannah Grant, Prudence Avery, Lydia Minor; and son-in-law, John Avery, who was to buy and set her gravestone and the gravestones of her deceased sons, Thomas Minor and Manasseh Minor. She died Dec. 9, 1762, at Stonington, Conn.

    Born April 20, 1679, at Groton, New London Co., Conn. and baptized June 29, 1679, at the First Church of New London. Thomas married Ann Shapley, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Picket) Shapley. She was born Aug. 31, 1685 at New London, New London Co., Conn.
    Thomas-4 Avery owned land in Saybrook. A controversy between him and Thomas Lord relating to certain lands there was settled Dec. 8, 1704. September 11, 1703, he sold land in Saybrook, called Pochange, and styled himself yeoman of Saybrook. June 5, 1706, he and his brother Samuel sold land in Pochange to Samuel Chapman. October 24, 1706, he called himself of New London, gent, and deeded to Samuel Chapman land that should have been includedc in a deed given him, June 5, 1706, at Pochange, Oyster River tract (Saybrook Deeds). He died before Nov. 25, 1711, at which time his widow marrried Jonathan Roff (Ross?). In the inventory of the estate taken at New London, Dec. 11, 1711, the widow is called Ann Ruff and the children are Thomas, aged 6, and Ann, aged 4. She married 3d, James Morgan, June 24, 1729, at New London, and died June 17, 1751, at Groton.
    June 17, 1751, "Ann Morgan, relic of Dea. James Morgan, deceased aged abt 68. Her first husband, was Thomas Avery, her second Jonathan Roff" (Hempstead's Diary, p. 570)

Thomas married Anne SHAPLEY, daughter of Benjamin SHAPLEY and Mary PICKETT, on 12 Jul 1704 in New London, New London Co., Connecticut. Anne was born 31 Aug 1685 in New London, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 17 Jun 1751 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut.

   Born Nov. 15, 1680, at Groton, Conn. Samuel was baptized January 2, 1681, First Church of New London. He married June 23, 1702, at New London, Elizabeth Ransford, daughter of Jonathan and Martha Ransford, late of Boston, Mass.
    Mary (Smith) Raymond, in her will before referred to (page 108), made May 8, 1805, mentioned Elizabeth Avery, daughter of "my cousin Martha Ransford deceased." Jonathan Ransford was born July 26, 1661, at Boston, Mass., the child of Jonathan and Mary (Sunderland) Ransford. On April 2, 1698, John Sunderland deeded to Elizabeth Ransford, only child of Jonathan Ransford, late of Boston, mariner, certain lands "when she shall be 21 or marry" (Suffolk Deeds, 16:182). February 16, 1702, Samuel Avery, cordwainer, and Elizabeth, his wife, only child of Jonathan Ransford, sold her right in land owned by Jonathan Ransford for 125 pounds to John Sunderland (Suffolk Deeds, 21:171).
    Samuel-4 Avery called himself husbandman when, in conjunction with his brother Thomas, he sold land in Pochange, Oyster River quarter, to Samuel Chapman, June 5, 1706 (Saybrook Deeds). In 1710, he bought of Jonathan Rogers, twenty acres of land, house and orchard, on the north side of Saw-mill Brook, in Mohegan (Montville) (Henry Baker's History of Montville, p. 98). He probably lived and died on this place. He and Adonijah Fitch owned pew No. 8, in the original church erected in Montville.
    In his will dated Feb. 22, 1749/50, New London, North Parish, Samuel Avery mentioned wife, Elizabeth; sons, John and Ephraim; daughters, Martha, Elizabeth, Alethea, Hannah, Anna and Mary; "children of my son Ransford deceased, five shillings to each of them and to his son Samuel who now lives with me I give fifty pounds money old tenor" (New London Wills, F:56). He died Feb. 25, 1749/50, at Montville, New London Co., Conn. His widow died Sept. 9, 1761, at Montville.

    Baptized, Oct. 18, 1685, First Church of Stonington. Ephraim married Abigail ___. She died Aug. 25, 1717, and was buried in the Mason burying-ground at Mystic, New London Co., Conn.
    "Here lyeth ye body of Abigal ye wife of Ephraim Avery, who died 25th Aug, 1717, in ye 29th year of her age."
    On the footstone are words:
    "Abigail Avery, 1717, with their child one day old." She was probably Abigail Mason, daughter of Daniel and Rebecca (Hobart) Mason, born Feb. 3, 1689, at Stonington, New London Co., Conn. In the same small lot are buried Daniel and Rebecca Mason, her supposed father and mother.
    Ephraim-4 Avery was a mariner and sailed in the sloop "Sea Flower," Capt. King. The sloop arrived from Saltudus, April 17, 1719, with small pox aboard.
    Saturday, May 9, 1719, "Ephraim Avery was buried on Power Island, he died with Small Pox on Bord of Capt. King" (Hempstead's Diary, p. 88) June 3, 1719, the general court ordered that the doctor's fees and certain other charges be paid out of his estate (Conn. Col. Rec., 6:137).
    His estate was inventoried, Oct 19, 1719. His brother, Samuel Avery, administered it June 3, 1720; no mentioned of wife or child. Hannah Minor, his sister, accounted for certain things left in her care when he went to sea (New London Wills, B:372).

Ephraim married Abigail MASON, daughter of Daniel MASON and Rebecca HOBART. Abigail was born 3 Feb 1689 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 25 Aug 1717 in Mystic, New London Co., Connecticut and was buried in Mason Cemetery, Mystic, New London Co., Connecticut.

    Baptized March 6, 1692, First Church of New London. Abraham married March 14, 1727, at Montville, New London Co., Conn., Jane Hill, daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Sharswood) Hill of Montville. Jane was baptized March 8, 1701/2 at the First Church of New London. Abraham Avery and his wife were members of the church at Montville. In 1724, he was on of the committee to lay out the minister's land; in 1737, he was on of the society's committee; in 1750, he was chosen elder of the church. He was prominent in affairs connected with the Indians, being, in 1733, one of the grand jurors whose duty it was to look after all derelictions of the Mohegan Indians. In 1746, he was one of the committee to arrange that the Indians attend the parish church.
    He lived and died on his homestead which was on the Norwich road, North Parish, and was given him by his father, about March 20, 1722, on condition that he care for him and his "now spouse" during their natural lives (New London Deeds). His wife died July 26, 1744, at Montville, October 1, 1751, he married at Montville, Sarah Copp, daughter of Jonathan and Catherine (Lay) Copp, of Montville. She was born Dec. 3, 1712, at Montville. Abraham Avery died June 23, 1761, at Montville, Conn.
    Abraham and Jane (Hill) Avery's children were born at Montville, New London Co., Conn.

    William died unmarried. He made his will March 28, 1770, it was probated Oct. 9, 1770, at Willimantic. He divided his estate among sister Jane, wife of James Chapped; sister Hannah, wife of Daniel Smith; sister Ruth, wife of Abel Griswold; Thomas William, son of brother Nathan deceased; brothers, Thomas, Jonathan and Abraham. 89. Thomas HEWITT III (Thomas HEWITT , Hannah PALMER , Walter ) was born 3 Feb 1685/1686 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut and was christened 20 Jun 1686 in Road Church, Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. He died 1767 in Canaan, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., 3 Feb 1685 (VR), son of Thomas Hewitt and Lydia Utley, died at Canaan, Conn. in 1767. Thomas married PERSIS CLEVELAND of Canterbury, Conn. at Stonington, 24 Oct. 1706 (VR). Persis was born in Chelmsford, Mass., 21 Apr 1683 (VR), daughter of Samuel Cleveland and Persis Hildreth, she died before 22 June 1764 when Thomas wrote his will.
    Thomas and Persis resided in Stonington until about 1716 when they moved to Plainfield, Windham Co., Conn. where they lived for almost 25 years. Thomas and family left Plainfield in 1738, bought land in Canaan near border of Sheffield, Mass. By 1741, they had settled in Falls Village near Canaan, Litchfield Co., Conn. In September of that year, they were admitted to the 1st Congregational Church of Canaan by letter from the Plainfield Church. They remained in the Canaan area he rest of their lives.
    First person to die in Canaan was "Mrs. Hewitt, wife of Thomas, died of a fever" about 1744 (Canaan Town Records, Olmstead).
    Thomas wrote his will on 22 June 1764. It was probated in 3 Apr 1767 (Book III, p. 192, LDS film #5681), naming his only surviving son, Ephraim Hewitt, executor (Litchfield Co. Wills, docket #5687). The will did not mention Thomas' wife, Persis, who had evidently preceded him in death, nor did it mention sons Thomas and John, or daughter Azubah. Daughters Lydia, wife of Isaac Lawrence; Elizabeth, wife of John Warren; Prudence, wife of Benjamin Wheeler; and Thankful, wife of Samuel Churchill, were given bequests. Son Ephraim was to have all the land and buildings, while Ephraim's son Benjamin was given his grandfather's carpentry tools. The exact date of Thomas' death is unknown.

    His will was dated February 9, 1771, and probated September 6, 1771.
    He was for many years a Deacon in the Church at North Stonington CT, the town of Stonington having been divided into two parishes in 1727.
    He married, first, April 20, 1720 (before he was 20 years old), Ann Brown of Stonington. She was born February 1, 1699/1700, and died March 11, 1766. Just two months and three days afterwards, on May 14, 1766, he married, second, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Persis (Cleveland) Hewitt. She was born April 12, 1709.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., Aug 1688 (VR) and baptised at the 1st Congregational Church of Stonington, 24 July 1692, son of Benjamin Hewitt and marie Fanning; died in Stonington in 1761. Benjamin married ANN PALMER on 3 Mar 1707 at Stonington (Wheeler). Ann was born about 1682 and baptised at the 1st Congregational Church of Stonington, 20 May 1683, daughter of Gershom Palmer and Ann Denison; no date for her death has been found but she was sitll living in Jan. 1760 at the time her husband drew up his will.
    Benjamin and Ann lived their lives on a farm in Stoningtohn. In his will written 3 Jan 1760 and probated 12 My 1761 (New London Probate Records, docket @2599), Benjamin left 1/3 of the land, the biggest room in the dwelling house, allo household goods, a cow and a mare to his wife Ann. Provisions were made for daughter Content to live with her mother until she married. Daughter Keziah and sons, Nathan and Jepthia, were given legacies of maney. Two grand-daughters (unnamed) and a grandson "if there is one", children of son Edmund who was deceased, were mentioned in the will.Sons, Walter and Abijah, were to divide the remainder of the estate equally and to be exedutors. The sons, Benjamin and Oliver, were not mentioned in the will so they eigher died young or predeceased their father and left no heirs.
    While no tombstones remain, both Benjamin and his wife Ann were buried in the Hewitt family cemetery locatedd in his brother Isreal Hewitt's orchard in Stonington. Isreal made note of their graves in his will when he set aside 1/2 an acre in his orchard to be a permanent burying grounds.

    Born in Stonington, Conn. in April 1691 (VR) and baptised at the 1st Congregational Church of Stonington, 24 Jul 1692, son of Benjamin Hewitt and Marie Fanning; died in Stonington, 19 Jun 1770, age 87 years (tombstone), Isreal married 1st, ANNA BREED, on 8 Mar 1713/14 at Stonington (VR). Anna was born in Stonington, 8 Nov 1693 (VR), daughter of John Breed and Mercy Palmer; she died 23 July 1771, age 78 years (tombstone). Anna was the mother of all of Isreal's children. Both she and Isreal were buried in the Hewitt family cemetery which Isreal set aside in the orchard of his farm.
    At age 81 years, Isreal married 2nd, MARY____. They signed a marriage agreement on 8 Dec. 1773, the date being mentioned in his will.
    Isreal and Anna lived in Stonington on the farm inherited from his father. Through the years he added several more parcels to his holding, making him a large land owner. Isreal was a respected member of the community andheld the rank of major in the Stonington militia.
    His will, dated 18 March 1776, was probated in 1770 (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1627). A copy 9of the will was printed in THE HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., by Wheeler, pp. 176-8. Isreal left his considerable properties to his 3 sons, Isreal, Rufus and Charles. They were also named joint executors of the estate. Mary, his wife, was well provided for with a legacy agreed upon in their marriage contract. She was given Isreal's Negro servant, 2 rooms in the dwelling house, all needed provisions and a good riding horse for 12 months or as long as she remained in his house. Isreal's daughters had all predeceased him so were not named in the will. Three granddaughters were given lagacies. They were: Ann Hewitt, wife of Amos Hewitt (daughter of Simeon and Ann Miner), Ann Ledyard, wife of Col.\ William Ledyard (daughter of Nathaneil and Amy Williams) and Amy Stanton, wife of Job Stanton (daughter of Nathaniel and Amy Williams).

Joseph married 1st, MARY CHESEBOROUGH, 5 Oct. 1720, Stonington (VR), daughter of Samuel Cheesebrough and Priscilla Alden (who was the granddaughter of Mayflower passengers John Alden and Priscille Mullins); Mary died in Stonington, 12 Oct. 1754 in her 53rd year (tombstone) and was buried in the Old Plains Cemetery at Stonington.
    Joseph married 2nd MENITABLE (BROWN) SWAN, widow of Nathaniel Swan, In North Stonington, Conn., 4 June 1755 (CR). Mehitable was born in Stonington August 1712 (VR), daughter of John Brown and Elizabeth Miner; the date of her death has not been found. Wheeler's HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN. erroneously listed Mehelible as the wife of Joseph, Jr., her step-son, Wildey, in the CHESEBROUGH GENEALOGY correctly identified her as the 2nd wife of Joseph, the father. The son married Sarah Babcock in 1756.
    Joseph and his family resided in Stonington. He served as captain in the militia and was known as Capt. Joseph the remainder of his life. His will was written 18 Nov. 1784 and probated 2 July 1787 (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1632). Joseph provided for his wife Mehitable, his son Joseph and for his daughters, Hannah Wheeler, Prudence Lewis, and Ann Whipple. The rest of Joseph's children had predeceased their father. Grandson Josiah Grant Hewitt, son of Nathaniel, was named executor of the estate. The exact dates of joseph and Mehitable's deaths are unknown.
