(Continued)

They had the following children:

+ 925 F i Mary PAGE was born 30 Jan 1749 and died after 1783.

Hannah married Shepard WHEELER, son of Thomas WHEELER and Mary MINER, on 18 Oct 1751 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. Shepard was born 31 Jul 1725 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.

They had the following children:

DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 26.
Born in Stonington, Conn., 2 May 1731 (VR), son of Joseph Hewitt and Mary Chesebrough; died after 1784, when mentioned in his father's will, date and place unknown. Joseph married SARAH BABCOCK, 27 May 1756, in Voluntown, Conn. (NYB&GR). Sarah was born in North Stonington, Conn., 18 Apr 1739 (VR), daughter of Nathaniel Babcock and Sarah Billings; she died in Petersbury, Rensselaer Co., NY on 27 Aug 1792 (Brown).
Wheeler, in the HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., was in error when he listed Joseph's wife as Mehitable (Brown) Swan. She was the 2nd wife of his father. During the French and Indian War, Joseph served in the Conn. militia from 10 Apr to 10 Dec 1764, in Capt. John Tyler's co., Lt. Col. Israel Putnam's regiment of Conn. troops.
Joseph and Sarah lived in the Stonington area of Conn. until sometime before 1782, when they moved to New York and settled in Stephentown, Albany Co. (now Rensselaer Co.), NY. They were there at the time of the 1790 U.S. Census. It may be that after the death of his wife in 1792, Joseph moved to Providence, Saratoga Co., NY. No probate or cemetery records have been found for Joseph. THE NATHANIEL BABCOCK GENEALOGY, by Cyrus Henry Brown, mentions only two children belonging to Joseph and Sarah, a daughter Mary and a son Joseph. Wildey, in the GENEALOGY OF THE CHESEBROUGH FAMILY, listed 5 other children; Billings, Nathaniel, Samuel, David and Grace. No proof has been discovered to substantiate those children. The Nathaniel on the list has been confused with Nathaniel (#152), son of Nathaniel (#42), and some researchers have confused the Samuel on the list with Samuel (#190), son of Jonas Hewitt (#60).

DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 27.
Born in Stonington, Conn., 10 May 1723 (VR), son of Elkanah Hewitt and Hannah Sterry; died after Feb. 1776, when his father drew up his will and mentioned his son Elkanah, date and place unknown. Elkanah married ELIZABETH MINER, 11 Oct 1740, at the 2nd Church of Christ, North Stonington, Conn. (CR). Elizabeth was born in Stonington, 24 Nov 1730 (VR), daughter of Samuel Miner and Elizabeth Brown; she died after May 1770, date and place unknown. Elkanah and Elizabeth resided in Stonington, Conn. where all of their children were born. No probate records or cemetery records have been found for this couple.
It has been suggested that Elkanah may have married 2nd, Lucretia (Fish) Palmer, widow of Samuel Palmer, but no records have been found to substaniate that marriage (Boston Transcript, 12 Apr 1935, $38). Lucretia was baptized 25 Dec 1736, at the 1st Congregational Church of Groton, Conn. (VR), daughter of John Fish and Lucretia Parker; date and place of her death unknown.

This is from Tom Berns at [email protected]
Elkanah Hewitt, Jr. on the No. Stonington, Ct. web page states that there are no documents to substantiate the assertion that he remarried Mrs. Lucretia (Fish) Palmer [widow of Samuel Palmer] after the death of his first wife, Mrs. Elizabeth (Minor) Hewitt.  Actually, the probate papers for Captain John Fish of Groton (died abt. 1790) [Stonington District Probate Packets - avail. on microfilm loan from the LDS Library in Salt Lake City] includes a Will which refers to "my daughter Lucretia Hewitt" and a receipt signed by "Elkanah Hewitt and Lucretia Hewitt."  Furthermore, the Palmer Family believes that Thankful Hewitt (b. 1753  as Elkanah, Jr.'s daughter by Elizabeth Minor) married Ethel Palmer, instead of John Randall - as indicated in your history.  This supposition is perhaps circumstantially aided by the fact that Ethel and Thankful (Hewitt) Palmer's daughter Elizabeth married James Palmer, who was the son of Lucretia (Fish) (Palmer) Hewitt and therefore the step-brother of Thankful (Hewitt) Palmer.

During the Rev. War, Simeon and his brother, Silas Hewitt, were on the rolls of Capt. Martin's co., Col. Lippett's regt. of Rhode Island troup before Sept 1776.

They were in Rhode Island for a few years before returning to Stonington, Conn. where they were living in 1782 when their 16 year old son, Simeon, substituted for his father in the military draft (son's Rev. War Pension Record, #W25766). Sometime before 1800, the family moved to Washington Co., NY where they first settled in the town of Hartford. The 1810 NY census listed Simeon and his wife residing in Hebron, Washington Co. near their son Isaac Hewitt. The eldest son, Simeon, remained in New London Co., Conn. but the rest of this family went to New York State.
No probate records or cemetry records have been found for Simeon or his wife Rachel. Wheeler, in the HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., listed the 4 sons known to have been born to this couple. They may have had other children.

Born in Canterbury, Windham Co., Conn., 7 Jun 1757 (VR), son of Henry Hewitt and Joanna Denison; died in Pomfret, Windsor Co., Vermont, 24 Jan 1813 (VR). Stephen married ALICE SHEPARD, 2 Oct 1778 at Brooklyn, Conn. (Vail). Alice was born in Canterbury, Conn., 16 Sep 1755 (VT), daughter of Benjamin Shepard and Martha Goodale; she died in Pomfret, VT, 30 Mar 1844 (VR). Both Stephen and Alice were buried in the Burns Cemetery at Pomfret.
Stephen was captain in the local Conn. militia during the Revolutionary War.
He inherited the family farm from his father when he became of age. He and Alice resided on that farm in the Canterbury-Brooklyn area until about 1794. They followed his brother, Increase Hewitt, to Pomfret, Vermont where they settled for the rest of their lives.
The story is told in Henry Hobart Vail's book, HISTORY OF POMFRET, VERMONT, that "One winter evening, Mrs. Stephen Hewitt was annoyed by some animal at the door, which she thought to be a dog. Wishing to drive him away, she suddenly opened the door and thumped him soundly with a broom, whereupon he fled. The tracks next morning showed that it was a bear."
