DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Page 79.
Born in Stonington, Conn., 12 May 1742 (VR), son of Nathaniel Hewitt and Rebecca Grant. Died after 1810, at and place unknown but possibly in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, or Vernon, Oneida Co., NY, which were towns he or his son, Josiah Grand, Jr. were known to have lived. Josiah married MERCY WILLIAMS, 27 Jan 1763, at the 1st Church of Stonington (Church Records). Mercy was born in Stonington, 24 Jan 1744 (VR), daughter of Thomas Williams and Mercy Raymond. The date and place of her death are unknown.
Josiah and Mercy resided in Stonington, Conn. where they were members of the 1st Church of Stonington. They lived there at least through 2 Jul 1787, when he was named executor of his grandfather, Capt. Joseph Hewitt's estate (Stonington Probate Records, docket #1632). By 1790, Josiah had moved his family to Albany Co., NY, and by 1800, he and the family were living in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. They were still in Palatine in 1810, with 2 females still living at home with the parents. The US census information for 1790-1810, seems to indicate that Josiah and Mercy had at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. There may have been others in this family.
No probate records of cemetery records have been found for Josiah and his wife, Mercy.

919. Nathaniel HEWITT (Nathaniel HEWITT , Joseph HEWITT , Benjamin HEWITT , Hannah PALMER , Walter ) was born 15 Oct 1746 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. He died about 1831 in Coventry, Vermont.

DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN THOMAS HEWITT OF STONINGTON, CONN.. Compiled by Virginia Hewitt Watterson, 1996. Found in the Joseph Smith Library, Salt Lake City, Ut. Pages 80 & 82.
Born in Stonington, Conn, 15 Oct 1746 (VR), son of Nathaniel Hewitt and Rebecca Grant. He died in Coventry, Vermont about 1831 (Avery). Nathaniel married 1st ANNA HOBART, 30 Nov 1766, at the 1st Church of Stonington (CR). Nothing is known of Anna Hobart except that she was the mother of the first 4 children of Nathaniel. She probably died shortly after the birth of their 4th child. Nathaniel married 2nd, SARAH AVERY about 1787 (Wheeler). Sarah was born in Groton, Conn., 7 Aug 1761 (VR), daughter of Christopher Avery and Eunice Prentice. She died in Coventry, Vermont in 1833 (Avery). An obituary printed in the Connecticut Observer newspaper, issue 30 Dec 1833, stated that Mrs. Sarah Hewitt died at Coventry, 1833, age 73 years (newspaper).
During the Revolutionary War, Nathaniel enlisted as a private in 1776 in Capt. Joshua Babcock's co., Col. John Topham's Rhode Island regiment. He was wounded in the leg, thigh and right breast at a battle on Butt's Hill, RI, 1 Sept 1778, and discharged from service.
Nathaniel was placed on the Invalid Rolls, 5 Jan 1809, for his disabilities and received a pension of $3.75 per month from the government. This was increased to $6 in 1816. Another pension was issued to him 18 Sept 1823, at New London, Conn. for $8 per month (Rev. War Pension #819328). By 7 Sept 1826, he had moved to Panton, Addison Co., Vermont, and requested his pension be sent there.
Nathaniel and Sarah lived in New London, Conn. from 1788 until the autumn of 1826. In their later years, they made the move to Vermont to be near their children. He stated on the pension application that most of their children were living in Vermont.
Some confusion has arisen over this Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel Hewitt and Rebecca Grant, and a reported Nathaniel, son of Joseph Hewitt and Sarah Babcock. There is no proof of the latter Nathaniel being born. We know this Nathaniel did serve in the Revolutionary War and that he lived in New London, Conn. as stated in his pension affidavit. There was only one Nathaniel Hewitt listed in the Conn. census 1790-1810, this Nathaniel, and he lived in New London. We know that the children of Nathaniel and Sarah, with the exception of son Nathaniel, who became a minister, and son Joseph, who died at sea, were all in Vermont by 1826. Wheeler, in the HISTORY OF STONINGTON, CONN., correctly identified this Nathaniel as being the husband of 1st Anna Hobart, and 2nd, Sarah Avery. Wildey, in the GENEALOGY OF THE CHESEBROUGH FAMILY, used a family legend passed on by a descendant saying this Nathaniel was the son of Joseph Hewitt and Sarah Babcock, however, only 2 children of that couple have been identified, a son Joseph and a daughter Polly.
