943. Andrew HEWITT (Henry HEWITT , Elkanah HEWITT , Benjamin HEWITT , Hannah PALMER , Walter ) was born 2 Apr 1761 in Voluntown, New London Co., Connecticut. He died 11 Aug 1852 in Wallingford, Rutland Co., Vermont and was buried in Sugar Hill Cemetery, Wallingford, Rutland Co., Vermont.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., 2 Apr 1761 (Rev. War Pension), son of Henry Hewitt and Sarah Keeney. He died in Wallingford, Rutland Co., Vermont, 11 Aug 1852, age 91 years (tombstone). Andrew married 1st. RACHEL BOARDMAN (Bible). Rachel was born in Preston, Conn., 5 Apr 1766 (VR), daughter of Joseph Boardman and Rachel Killan. She died in Wallingford, VT, 9 Sep 1832, age 66 years (tombstone).
    Andrew married 2nd, PHEBE ____ after 1832. Phebe was born about 1773 and died in Wallingford, VT, 22 Aug 1835, age 62 years (tombstone). Andrew married 3rd, JULIA (BUCKLIN) GRISWOLD, 5 Sep 1839, at Wallingford (Rev. War Pension). Julia was born in Mass. about 1790. She died at Wallingford, 3 Oct 1853, age 63 years (tombstone). Andrew and his 3 wives were buried in the Sugar Hill Cemetery at Wallingford.
    During the Rev. War, Andrew served from Voluntown, Conn. He was drafted at age 16 in May 1777, for 2 months. He enlisted Mar 1778, in the Continental Army for 9 months under Col. Surgis, and later, under Col. Willis at West Point, NY. On 20 May 1779, he was again drafted from Voluntown for 2 more months. The following year Andrew enlisted in July 1780, in Col. Christopher Grim's regiment until he was discharged at Butt's Hill, RI in Jan 1781.
    Andrew left his home in Voluntown, Conn after the war and by 1792, he had followed his sister Sabra and her husband, Joseph Randall, to Wallingford, VT where he resided the rest of his life. His will, dated 17 May 1851, was probated 11 Oct 1852 (Rutland Co. Probate Records, Book 28, p. 58). Andrew left $100 to each of his 3 daughters, Eunice Pulsifer, Roxy White and Polly Wells. The reminder of the estate, personal and real property, was to go to daughter Electa Smith and her husband, Isaac Smith, provided they came to live with Andrew and his wife Julia, and gave them kind and affection care in their old age, and nurse them in their sickness.
    The Smiths were to come before 1 Apr 1852, to care for the elderly couple.
    Joel W. Ainworth was named executor of the estate.
    All of Andrew's children were born to his 1st wife, Rachel.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., 7 Jun 1763 (Rev. War Pension), son of Henry Hewitt and Sarah Keeney. He died in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., Michigan, 8 Nov 1851 (tombstone) and buried in the Brookside Cemetery at Tecumseh. Henry married PHEBE MORGAN, 26 Nov 1786 (Morgan). Phebe was born in New London, Conn., 10 Jun 1765 (Morgan), daughter of Thomas Morgan and Sarah Leeds. She died in East Venice, Cayuga Co., NY, 18 Nov 1822, age 57 years (tombstone) and was buried in the East Venice Cemetery.
    During the Revolutionary War, Henry enlisted for 1 year as a private from Stonington, Conn. in Capt Whiting's co., Col. Oliver Smith's regiment in March 1778. He re-enlisted for 6 months in the fall of 1779, in Capt. Hewitt's co., Col. Willis' regt., and for 7 months in May 1780, in Capt. Olmsted's co., Col. Sherman's regt. Henry applied for a pension 24 Sep 1832, from Venice, NY. For his 2 years service, he received a pension of $80 per year beginning 4 Mar 1831 (Rev. War Pension #S29218).
    Henry and Phebe lived in Conn. for a few years after their marriage before moving to Cayuga Co., NY. They were in Aurora, NY by 1794, and the next year settled permanently in East Venice, NY. After Phebe's death, a fire destroyed Henry's home in East Venice. He moved to Tacumseh, Michigan in 1849, to live his remaining years with his son Charles and family.

    Henry's wife Phebe was daughter of Sarah Leeds and Thomas Morgan and sister to Ephraim Morgan who lived next door. Ephraim Morgan's wife was Mary, a sister to William, Sr. and Thomas Hewitt.
    Henry kept a store that was taken over by sons Charles and Henry Leeds Hewitt. He had an army pension. Henry went to Michigan in his old age to join his children who went there earlier. He died in 1841 in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., Michagin.

Henry married Phebe MORGAN, daughter of Thomas MORGAN and Sarah LEEDS, on 26 Nov 1768 in Connecticut. Phebe was born 10 Jun 1765 in New London, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 18 Nov 1822 in East Venice, Cayuga Co., New York and was buried in East Venice Cemetery, East Venice, Cayuga Co., New York.

    He was paymaster in Col. John Tillotson's regiment of Cayuga Co., New York, militia in 1810; moved from the county before 1814. The division of his estate gives the names and locations of many of his relatives.
    Petition of Henry Hewett of Venice, NY, sworn to March 15, 1847, shows that Cyrus Avery of Moravina, died Feb. 24, 1847; that he left a will dated April 17, 1838, by which he appoints his wife executrix. The petition states that she has died. The petition further shows that he left a next-of-kin, Hezekiah, Daniel and Rebecca Morgan of Ledyard, Charles of Brutus, and Henry of Wayne Co., Pa., being brothers and sisters of the deceased. Simeon married MAHALA HEWITT (#174), 18 Jan 1787, at Stonington, Conn. (Rev. War Pension). Mahala was born in Stonington, 2 May 1767 (Bible), daughter of Henry Hewitt (#56) and Sarah Kenney; she died in Ledyard, Conn. 29 Jul 1847, age 80 years (Bible & tombstone). Both she and Simeon were buried in the Gates Cemetery at Preston, Conn.
    When he was not yet 16 years old, Simeon served as a substitute for his father in Conn. Line during the Revolutionary War. The length of his service is not known but he applied for a pension based on his military service 18 Aug 1832, while living in Preston, Conn. Mahala applied for a widow's pension 8 Aug 1843, and was granted one of $55 per year (Rev. War Pension #W25766)
    Simeon and Mahala resided in Stonington, Conn. until 1808, when they went to Preston, Conn. where they remained most of their married life. Shortly before their deaths, they were living in Ledyard, Conn at the home of their daughter, Phebe Bedant, where they both died.
    No probate records have been found for Simeon Hewitt but Mahala's estate was administered by her son-in-law, Jesse Bedant, on 6 Sep 1847 (Ledyard Probate Records, docket $468). She left 4 children still living; Polly Gates, Simeon Hewitt of Preston, Conn. Phebe Bedant of Ledyard, Conn., and Charles E. Hewitt of New London, Conn.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., 23 Feb 1771 (Caverly), son of Henry Hewitt and Sarah Keeney. He died in Pittsford, Rutland Co., Vermont, 8 Aug 1858, age 88 years (tombstone). James married PHEBE MEAD in June 1794 (Caverly). Phebe was born in West Rutland, Vermont, 13 Feb 1774 (Mead), daughter of Zebulon Mead and Mercy Cary. She died in Pittsford, VT, 8 Aug 1855, age 81 years (tombstone). Both Phebe and James were buried in the Old Congregational Church Cemetery at Pittsford.
    James left Conn. in 1787, and went to Vermont, probably first to Wallingford, VT where his brother Andrew and sister Sabra, wife of Joseph Randall had settled. He was in Pittsford by 1794, and purchased 82 acres of land there on 10 Nov 1895. After James cleared the land, he built a home in which he and Phebe raised their family. They had 12 children but only 9 grew to adulthood. Cavely listed the names of 9 children in THE HISTORY OF PITTSFORD, VT. After James died, his son, Seth Hewitt inherited the family farm , which had increased to 200 acres.

    Prentice married 2nd, ELIZA PRENTICE, 27 Mar 1802 (VR) at Stonington. Eliza was born about 1775, daughter of Col. Samuel Prentice and Ann Billings; she died in North Stonington, 17 Mar 1808, age 33 years (tombstone).
     Prentice married 3rd FANNY ___. She was born in Conn. about 1787, and died in North Stonington, 27 Nov 1867, age 80 years (Death Record). Prentice and his first 2 wives were buried in the Hewitt Cemetery in Stonington, Conn. It is not known where the 3rd wife Fanny was buried.
    Prentice resided in Stonington and North Stonington, Conn. His will, written 17 Jan 1838, was probated 19 Mar 1842 (North Stonington Probate Records, docket #395). He provided for his wife Fanny and his 4 children, Peggy Barber, Amos Hewitt, Eliza P. Hillard and Lucy Ann Hewitt. Also mentioned was a grandson, Franklin Hillard.
    The widow Fammy continued to live in North Stonington with her step-daughter, Eliza P. Hillard, and her family. Fanny was with them in 1850 and 1860.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., 8 Aug 1774 (VR), son of Henry Hewitt and Phebe Prentice, and twin to Joseph; died in North Stonington, Conn., 1 Jul 1867, age 92 years (tombstone). Benjamin married DESIRE BABCOCK, 21 Oct 1798, at Stonington (Wheeler). Desire was born in Conn., 30 Mar 1780 (tombstone), parents unknown; she died in North Stonington, 12 Jan 1875, age 94 years, 9 months and 12 days (tombstone). Both she and Benjamin were buried in the Wheeler Cemetery at North Stonington.
    Benjamin was a farmer. He and Desire resided in North Stonington where they raised their family and lived their remarkable long lives. Benjamin left a will dated 31 Mar 1867, and probated in 1867 (North Stonington Probate Records, Vol. 2, pp. 197-203). He provided for his wife Desire during her lifetime by giving her the use of ½ the dwelling house, all furniture and movables. $80 yearly plus foodstuffs. The 5 living daughters - Sally, Desire, Phebe, Louisa and Frances - were each given $125. Son Benjamin was to have $750, and Joseph was to have all real estate, cattle and farm tools. Joseph was named executor of the estate.

     Born in Stonington, Conn, 8 Aug 1774 (VR), son of Henry Hewitt and Phebe Prentice, and twin to Benjamin; died in Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY, 28 Jul 1830 (tombstone). Joseph married 1st, HANNAH _____, who was born in 1782 and died in Lewiston, NY, 15 Mar 1820, age 38 years (tombstone.
     Joseph married 2nd, ANNA _____, a widow, who was born 9 July 1776 (tombstone) and died in Lewiston, 22 Aug 1742 (tombstone). Joseph and his two wives were buried in the Lewiston Cemetery.
    As a young man, Joseph left Connecticut for western New York State. He and Hannah were in Ontario Co., NY in 1800, with 2 small children, a son and a daughter. In 1804, he purchased land from the Holland Land Company and settled initially, in Cambria, Niagara Co., NY. There he cleared his land and began farming. He also built and operated the first saw mill in the area. The first town meeting of Cambria was held 5 Apr 1808, in his home, and he was elected supervisor of the town for 1808 and 1809. Joseph served as supervisor again in 1815 and 1816. After the town of Lewiston was formed in 1818, Joseph moved his family there and developed a large farm. He set out 25 apple trees to establish the first apple orchard in Niagara Co., NY.
    Joseph left a will dated 12 Jun 1830, and probated 4 Sep 1830 (Niagara Co. Probate Records, Book 1, p. 75). The will provided $100 to his son Prentice, ½ in cash and ½ in property. To daughter Betsey, he gave $1000, and to daughter Olive, $800. Joseph gave 3 grandchildren, Phebe, Minerva and Harriet Olive, children of his deceased daughter Nancy Olive, $100 each when they reach their 18th year. The remainder of the estate was to be divided between his 3 sons, Joseph, Benjamin and James Hewitt. Sons Joseph and Benjamin were named executors of the estate.
    Little is known about Joseph's two wives, but the 1st wife, Hannah, was mother of all the known children in this family.

Amos married NANCY WELLS, 5 Apr 1798 (Moir Genealogy), Nancy was born in Stonington, 29 Aug 1777 (VR), daughter of David Wells and Hannah Stanton; she died in Marshall, Calhoun Co., Michigan, 24 Dec 1853, age 76 years (Bible & tombstone) and was buried in the Oakridge Cemetery at Marshall, Michigan.
    Amos and Nancy lived in North Stonington, Conn, for a few years after their marriage, then they followed his brother, Joseph Hewitt, to western New York State. They settled in Genesse Co., NY about 1806. Amos was listed as a landholder of Bergen, Genesse Co. in 1812. He established the first merchandise store in the village of Byron and continued to run the business there for many years. Amos took an active part in civic affairs and was elected supervisor of Byron in 1831 and again in 1835.
    After Amos died, Nancy went to live in Marshall, Michigan with one of her sons who had settled there.

    Carlos M. Hewitt was born in Sangerfield, Oneida Co., NY, 1 Jul 1808 (Death Rec.). He died in Boscobel, Grant Co., Wisconsin, 10 Feb 1882, age 74 years (Death Rec.). Carlos married Elizabeth Nash in 1840, at Watsingham, Upper Canada (bio. & obit). She was born 23 Mar 1820, in Hanover, Chautaugua Co., NY, daughter of Dr. Nash (obit). She died 13 Nov. 1891, Boscobel, Wisconsin, age 71 years (obit). Both were buried in Biscobel Cemetery, Biscobel, Wisconsin.
     At age 15, Carlos entered Lewiston Academy, Lewiston, NY in 1823. He studied medicine under his uncle, Dr. Winter Hewitt, in Batavia, Genesee Co., NY for a few years, then went to Canada and studied under Dr. Merrick for 3 years, and Dr. Nash for 2 years. He graduated from Fairfield Medical College in Herkimer Co., NY in Nov 1838, and returned to Canada for 2 years. In 1841 he was in Grand Detour, Ogle Co., Ill. but then to Grant Co., Wisconsin by 1850, and in May 1859, he and Elizabeth settled in the town of Boscobel where they remained. They had 4 children, all whom died as infants.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., about 1782, son of Jonas Hewitt and Comfort Billings; died in Westford, Otsego Co., NY, 11 Jul 1847, age 85 years (tombstone). Samuel married LUCINDA SWAN. Lucinda was born in Stonington, Conn., 16 Nov 1765 (VR), daughter of Jesse Swan and Elizabeth Baldwin; she died in Westford, NY 30 Oct 1746, age 82 years (tombstone). Both Samuel and Lucinda were buried in the Badeau Hill Cemetery at Westford.
    Samuel was a farmer. After their marriage, he and Lucinda lived for a few years in North Stonington, Conn. before moving to Otsego Co., NY about 1793. They settled on a farm in the town of Westford where they remained the rest of their lives.
    Samuel drew up his will, dated 12 May 1840, and probated 19 Apr 1848 (Otsego Co. Probate Records, Liber 8, pp. 216-8). The will provided for his wife Lucinda, who had preceded him in death, and for the care of their retarded daughter Lucinda. Daughters Polly Chase, Betsey Delong and Eunice Snyder, were each given $100. Son Samuel, Jr. was to have $150 when he came to call for it. Son Dr. Jesse was to have $50. The three children of deceased daughter, Abby Wright - Salida, Lyman and Olive Wright - were to each have $10. The 3 children of deceased son, Amos Hewitt - John, Harriet and Mary Hewitt - were also to have $10 each. All of the real estate was to go to sons Lyman and Alanson Hewitt, who were named executors of the estate.

    Born in Stonington, Conn., about 1766, son of Jonas Hewitt and Comfort Billings; died in Windham, Windham Co., Conn., 14 May 1850, age nearly 85 years (Bible, tombstone & VR). Jonas married EUNICE HOLMES, 14 Nov 1790, at Stonington, Conn. (VR). Eunice was born in Stonington, about 1765, daughter of Thomas Holmes and Margaret Frink; she died in Windham, Conn., 4 Jun 1847, age 82 years (Bible & tombstone). Jonas and Eunice were buried in the Windham Cemetery near several of their children.
    Jonas was a farmer. He and Eunice resided in Stonington, North Stonington and Griswold in New London Co., Conn. until sometime before 1830, when they moved to Windham, Windham Co., Conn.
    On 30 Mar 1842, Jonas wrote his will which was probated 13 Jun 1850 (Windham Co. Probate Records, docket #1875). An inventory was taken 18 Aug 1850, giving the value of $2516 for his real and personal property. The will left all his real property to his wife, Eunice, as long as she remains my widow. Daughter Olive was to receive 1/3 of the dwelling house until she married. Son Thomas was to have the rest of the remaining real estate after his mother's death. Thomas was to pay sums of money to other heirs from the property. Daughter Eunice, wife of Elias Armstrong, was to have $40; son Benjamin, $400; daughter Emeline Kinny, $100; grandson, William E. Beckwith, son of deceased daughter Sophia Beckwith, $30; children of deceased son Jonas $100; and children of deceased daughter Mary Ann Safford, $60. The son, Thomas H. Hewitt, was appointed executor of the estate.

    Unmarried farmer who inherited the family farm in Windham, Conn. Chester Hunt was appointed to administer Thomas' estate, which had a value of $16,353, to be distributed to 23 legatees, including his only living brother, Benjamin, and sister Olive Hewitt, and all the children of Thomas deceased brothers and sisters. The distribution was made 18 Apr1863 (Windham Co. Probate Records, docket #1876).
