   Wm. D. Hoxie received his education in the common schools of Brooklyn, NY; also in the Steven School of Technology, which he entered in 1885, graduating in 1889; then spent a year in the machine shops of Ridon and Marsh, and the same time carrying on experimental work for Mr. Stephen Wilcox, devoting his whole time to that work. In 1891 he became associated with the Babcock and Wilcox Company, manufactures of Watertube steam boilers, with a capital of $3,000,000. This company built and installed the Babcock and Wilcox Marine Boiler, in 1894, and is continuing to develop the same. Mr. Hoxie came on the Board of Directors in 1896; the year following was chosen second vice-president; in 1897 and 1898 was chosen first vice-president of the company. This company enjoys a reputation that is world-wide, manufacturing and Bayonne, NY; Renfrew, Scotland, near Glasgow; Paris, France; Oberhausen, Germany; with offices in the principal cities on the globe.

Since 1904 has been on the Board of Alderman, keeping posted on municipal matters, and gaining a clear insight into how the city business has been done -- and, to his mind, how it had been overdone and undone.
    At the municipal election Oct. 1, 1906, he was chosen against strong Democratic oppoistion, the Republican mayor of New London.

    He received first instruction in printing from Gov. George H. Utter, then editor and proprietor. He was later with the Providence Journal and Bulletin, and now, for the past eight years, compositor on the Boston Globe. He is a mamber of the International Typographical Union; Past Chancellor Horace Greely Lodge, K.P. [First lodge in the world to meet exclusively in the afternoon. Composed of newspaper men on the Boston morning papers. Known as "Daylight Lodge."] Member of the Boston Globe Relief Society and of the Franklin Typographical Society.
