Martha Ann Moore

Martha Ann3 (Isaac2, Mordicai1) married Jesse Carrigan October 20, 1853. Jesse Carrigan owned 270 Acres of land in south Palmyra Township and disappeared while taking a load of livestock to St. Louis to sell.  Family tales are that he burned in a hotel fire in St. Louis, Missouri, but I have been unable to verify a hotel fire at a Stock Yard location in that area, but do know he is deceased at the time of Isaac Moore's will as it so stipulates.

Martha was so dispondent after Jessee's demise that again "family tales" are that she committed suicide by eating lye or jumping into a well on the farm, or both.  They had a small daughter, Leathie Carrigan, at that time.  Mary Jane Carrigan was ill with pneumonia at the time and also had an ill infant who was dying, so older sister, Sarah Axley took infant Leathie and cared for her until her demise.  Sarah and Friston Asley lived in a tenant house on Jesse Carrigan's farm in South Palmyra Township.

Martha Moore Carrigan was used to a "fine" life style and was referred to by relatives as "the narrow-gutted Moore".  Relatives would visit and for a Sunday dinner, Martha would set the table with fine linen and china and serve biscuits and boiled potatoes.  They had a hired farm hand who had several children living in another tenant house on the farm and she would take leftovers, particular butter, cream and milk and pour it into the hog' trough in front of the hungry hand and his children.

          I.  Martha Ellen4 Carrigan, died about 1886, married Lewis Albert Hogan.  Martha Ellen's
father didn't care for the Hogan man and was highly opposed to his courting "Ellen".  He
gave Mary Jane Carrigan Cain a rifle and told her if "that Hogan character comes around
when I'm gone, shoot him."  Martha Ellen and Lewis Albert Hogan eloped.  She died of
pneumonia living in deplorable conditions.  He died a short time later of pneumonia. He
apparently was a poor provider. (by Carolynn Bettis ggg-grandaughter of Isaac Moore)
